I am fixing to leave for Austin for a weekend weeding.

We will be staying at the Hampton Inn on San Jacinto and 2nd (near Town Lake?). We are having dinner tonight at some famous mexican establishment on San Jacinto and 3rd (anyone know this place?).

Since these two places are a block away, is this area of town safe enough to walk the 1 block to/from late at night?

    Any info would be appreciated.

I don't know the place you're looking at, but all of Austin downtown is both well lit and safe at night. You won't have any problems.

I think the Mexican place is Rio Grande. OK food - nothing special.

You may also want to ask the hotel employees/front desk if you're worried about it.

sounds like rio grande or dona emilia's.

you're more than safe anywhere you go downtown, just stay on the city side of I-35. the other side is safe too, but you might feel uncomfortable, plus there's nothing over there. go to bars on 4th street if you want a mid 20s-30s crowd, 6th street is good to see if you've never been and you can stay if you like the college crowd.

subpar food. good location. the only thing that's "famous" is that it was once the Real World house for the Austin season.

If it were just my wife and I, I wouldn't be worried. But we will be walking back from the restaurant to the hotel at 11 or 12 with our 5 year old in tow.

If the restaraunt is at 3rd and San Jacinto, it's Rio Grande(the real world house) if the restaraunt is at San Jacinto and 1st(aka Caesar Chavez) it's Dona Emilia's. Dona Emilia's actually more South American food than it is Mexican.

The area's gonna have tons of people walking around since there are several hotels and several restaraunts within a few blocks of each other. Town Lake is a bit of a hike (depending on where you'd actually like to see it) maybe 6 or 7 blocks... but again, tons of people hiking, running, walking dogs... You'll be fine downtown. It's a pretty good place to be.

I work on 6th Street and I'm downtown alot at night. You should be fine over there. The only time I'm remotely nervous is near ARCH which is 7th and Neches. The people asking for money are more aggressive around there. I think you should be fine on that side of the convention center. Always be very aware of your surroundings though since you'll have your 5 yr old.

I recommend lamberts right next to city hall for dinner. also ztejas on 6th is good.
a good place for drinks and patio is the belmont.
stay west 6th street if you are over 25. oh laredo cantina is good too. I know the hotel you are at. its easy to walk to places.

Oh snap. I knew it. I ate at that restaurant 2 years ago, and it looked very similar... The food is okay.

Yeah, true. But I doubt that codell, wife, and child will be hitting up 6th, and I really seriously doubt they'd hit up Spiro's of all places.

I remember every time I walk by Spiros, it's always packed. It's not going anywhere.

To echo everybody else, you should be fine. Just avoid 6th street if you are less than a fan of drunk frat daddies.
