The great thing about the FairTax idea is that it's a complete *simple* replacement of all other taxes, and with the "prebate", it's naturally progressive without being complicated.
According to those that have studied it, consumption is more reliable than income, and it's certainly much more reliable than corporate income. (Our 34% drop in tax revenues this year so far is primarily because of our reliance on that.)
That being said, a sales tax without getting rid of the income tax is a really bad idea. It is a tax on the poor and middle class, a respnse to the reality that you cannot realistically increase tax take by raising income taxes on the wealthy beyond 30% or so.

I think those that are in favor are under the impression that it will replace income tax?

I don't see how people are in favor of adding more taxes for everyone?

There is a group of Republicans that favor the Fair Tax, but I haven't really seen them adding VAT to income tax. The Fair Tax hasn't become a party platform, but rather a platform for individual candidates.

I wouldn't consider myself a fan of the Fair Tax or VAT. I prefer a simplified income tax.

How are you expecting exemptions to work? Are you proposing that you pay the tax, and then they can apply for a refund?

No, I would do it with a card much like is already in use for food stamps, WIC, and other government programs. It would use the existing credit card infrastructure and would be exceptionally simple to manage.

I'm all for a fair tax, but this seems like an additional tax option rather than an alternative.

The FairTax folks are all about knocking out the IRS....I'm not saying that can be done...but that's their intent.

WIC in GA still uses vouchers. I've always wondered why the foodstamps were on a card, but they used such an old system for WIC.

What steps would be taken to reduce fraud, i.e. using someone else's card? If everyone has a card, it definitely makes theft of benefits, or borrowing someone elses card who may not use the full exemption more likely.

It wouldn't wipe it out, but it could become more effective, or leaner.

correct, this is in addition, not only to federal income tax, but also to lstate and ocal income taxes as well as state and local sales taxes.

    there's nothing fair about it.

I have a better plan it is called the 'really' fair tax plan.

Since the government is of the people, by the people and for the people let each person decided for themselves individually what is their fair share of tax to pay and send in that amount voluntarily every April 15th.

Come on politicians trust us to do the right thing like we trust you. ;)

I would move to a flat tax tomorrow as long as it did not affect food (as is now the current local sales tax rule) and was a "replacement" for the income tax. This is the fairest way to have a national tax so that everyone pays their "fare share". What would be a problem is if they add the flat tax on top of all the other taxes already in existence.

And to reiterate my point.....why can't the government reduce its spending to balance the budget? This is not rocket science here, I think an audit of the books would show considerable wasteful spending in areas most Americans cannot imagine.

Deficit spending is key to revival in a recession. Nobody wants to see their taxes raised or new taxes added, but with our country facing more than 10 trillion in debt, everybody has to sacrifice.

What now, you want to resurrect the Articles of Confederation? No one likes to be taxed. Then all the taxes will get abolished and the whole country will collapse. Much worse than California did.

"When there is an income tax, the just man will pay more and the unjust less on the same amount of income."--Plato

"In the fifty years after Diocletian the Roman tax burden roughly doubled, making it impossible for small farmers to live on their production (Bernardi 1970: 55). [14] This is what led to the final breakdown of the economy (Jones 1959). As Lactantius (1984: 13) put it:

The number of recipients began to exceed the number of contributors by so much that, with farmers' resources exhausted by the enormous size of the requisitions, fields became deserted and cultivated land was turned into forest."-- Fall of Rome

    I don't mind paying taxes

sales tax is great if there are reasonable exemptions. thats why sales tax in many states is considerably better than sales tax in texas.
