no crap! i was yelling at my TV when i saw lewis PUSH tyson down for the "final knockout"... BS! tyson just looked frustrated b/c he couldn't get inside of Lewis, who kept his distance in order to take advantage of his reach... and anytime Tyson did get inside, Lewis just HELD him!!! what was up with that ridiculous wall of yellow shirted people in the ring before the fight... i think they took the whole "you gotta keep 'em separated" theory a bit too far with that one!
Excuse me, do you think you deserve a cookie because you chose the right fighter in this one fight? You had a 50% chance of making the correct one, no big accomplishment. And by your original post, I can tell you just watched some ESPN and guessed. In the last five years however, my accuracy is near 90% in all major fights. The only other major fight I missed was Tito v Vargas. I'll come back here before every major fight and if we were to place bets, I would have your ass on welfare. Lets see if you put your money were your mouth is, beyatch!
Did any of you guys see the Pac-Man fight? I saw him on the undercard in the De La Hoya v Castillo fight, and was very impressed, and tonight he did it again. For a skinny, puny looking guy, that guy BOMBS.
Burt Sugar, is that you? Of course I deserve a cookie...that's the prize, right? Anyway, the boxing prognostication showdown is here! Yay. Probably would be more exciting than the fight, Dude, I am sure you are the master of all that is boxing and all that. It seems like this is really important to you, anyway. I'll check my fight prediction stats in...oh, about never! This is standard sports BBS BS-ing, is it not? It doesn't seem like the outcome was stunning, even to those of us who haven't had such a storied and impressive career as a boxing analyst as you evidentally have. Basic rule of boxing is that the skilled big man will usually beat the skilled little man, right? Tyson has probably not fought 30 rounds total, or so, in the last 10 years and the fights he has been in were jokes. Right? When Franz Botha is your best opponent, maybe you aren't ready for a fighter who has kept up a steady pace as heavyweight champion. The last tough fight Tyson won was probably Razor Ruddick in 91, or 92. As for my original post about Tua, I have followed him for a few years and originally thought he would give Lewis some trouble. My wife is from New Zealand, as is Tua, so I probably followed him more closely than normal. Anyway, I watched the fight and saw that Lewis at 6'5" is strong enough to dictate a fight with people like Tua, or Tyson. Who taught me that? Right, you guessed it..E-S-P (I predicted it!)-N! Final thought: if you predicted that Sugar Shane Mosley would have lost his last fight than you Nostradamus! Anyway, nice chatting with you about the semi-sweet science. Who's gonna win between Vargas and De la Hoya?
please tell me you're kidding with the above post!!! do you think "you deserve a cookie" because you can "tell" us you're great at predicting fights?? particularly the day after the way you said THIS fight would go down?? particularly after the exclamatory way in which you said something along the lines of "get ready to lose money if you have it on lewis." the day after losing a called shot is not a great time to tell everyone how great you are at calling shots. now..about the fight...this was Tyson-Douglas all over again. again, tyson is outclassed by someone with a superior jab..he refuses to go to the body, as he's refused to do for years now, and he can't land the flurry of punches we all know he could deliver if he could chop his way inside...the way he USED to beat bigger fighters. those days are gone..tyson looked winded and he was completely controlled by lewis. so much for the, "it will take lewis 6 rounds to get control of this fight" though that I heard over and over again on ESPN and elsewhere. He took control of the fight from the first round and held on to it. Lewis has now beaten every serious heavyweight of his day. He is the greatest heavyweight of the last 10 years, no matter how boring you may think he is. He's beaten Evander...he's beaten Rahman..he's beaten Tyson...he's beaten them all.
Sorry to act obsessive about this, but I am still buzzed by the fight and bunch of other stuff. Did you notice after about the 4th round tonight that Tyson stopped throwing punches? Lewis' jab is so long and vicious that it will sap even the most agressive fighters. Larry Holmes-esque. It was just like the Tua fight. Tua lunged and threw gigantic haymakers early on and Lewis just popped him repeatedly square in the face and after a point he stopped punching to avoid the beating. I think that Lewis hasn't been embraced because, like in the Tua fight, he usually does enough to win, but not punish his opponents. If you look at fights where he has something to prove like in the 2nd Mccall, Rachman, or Micheal Grant bouts he is capable of real domination. It's too bad that the only real challenge for Lewis at this point is with that Russian fighter who's name escapes me. Vladimir something? I've seen only a few clips, but is evidentally the real deal (the Yao Ming of boxing?) I don't think the fight would draw enough money to lure Lewis out from Miami Beach for the risk. Despite Tyson being a shot fighter, I think this win secures Lewis' legacy, don't you all agree? Theory: do any of you think that Mike did the biting trick at the press conference to get out of this fight because he knew he couldn't beat Lewis? Tyson is said to be something of a boxing scholar (that comes up twice this morning)....maybe he knew he was in trouble? Just a theory. After the fight, I must say that Mike Tyson was recognizably human to me for the first time in a long time. Maybe this beating will actually lead to something good for Mike.
My point was, picking one fight right is no major accomplishment and doesn't give you the right to call people names. Now onto the fight. First off, props to Lewis, he fought a very smart fight. If Lennox had a Tyson or Tua like chin, he would be a top 3 HW in history. Lewis did hold in the first few rounds, which was brilliant. No, I'm not making excuses, every fighter holds at some point and time but Lewis knew that the first few rounds would be the most dangerous and took that away from Mike. I thought Tyson would get it together one last time for his last big fight, I was wrong. He is the only man to ko Larry Holmes and in many ways, Larry and Lewis are alike. Mike Tyson is a hard fighter to predict, his state of mind dictates what kind of fighter he will be in the ring. When Mike walked out, he looked as if he was uninterested and he eventualy fought that way. The first thing that made me think something was wrong was when the ref was giving pre fight intructions to Mike in the dressing room. Mike was very polite, an unusual trait for Mike minutes before a fight is to start. The feriousity Mike usually unleashes did not rear it's head. Mike didn't use any combinantions, no bobing and weaving, and his footwork was terrible. The only thing Mike showed us was his very good chin. I don't know if any fighter in the HW today could take the amount of punishment that Mike did. A source has told me that it will soon come out that Mike was drugged in the week leading up to the fight to "control his behavior." Does that account for his bad showing, who knows. I firmly believe that it's time for Mike Tyson to retire, if he has to take drugs to control his behavior inside and outside of the ring or if he just is in it for the money, he will never even resemble the once great and fierce fighter once know as the "Baddest Man on the Planet," no matter how hard he trains. Elvis Costello, the Ukranian you are refering to is Wladimir Klitschko. He has a brother fighting as well, named Vitaly. They are both huge fighters, standing at around 6ft 7, 250 pnds. They have both already lost a fight and have question marks all around them. Wladimir, the better of the two, lost to journeyman Ross Purrity. Wlad simply ran out of gas and was going to be knocked out, his corner realized this and threw in the towel. Vitaly lost a fight to Chris Byrd. Vitaly was winning this fight and I believe in the 10th round, quit his fight claiming injury. It is hard to say how good they are as their competition has been very average. The best fighter that they have faced has been the very small Chris Byrd. I haven't seen that much of Vitaly, but I have seen Wlad quite a bit. He has good handspeed, ring generalship, power, and is pretty fluid for such a big man. His defense is flawed but that may be due to the fact that his trainers are far from top notch. I think the biggest unknown about Wlad is his chin. He just hasn't faced good enough comp to make an evaluation. If Wlad does have a good chin, works on his defense and learns to pace himself, he is the future of the HW division. Wlad is scheduled to fight the 40yr old Ray Mercer this month, Vitaly's next fight will be against Larry Donald. By the way, they have both stated that they will never fight each other, a promise made to their mother. Here's a link to their website: http://www.klitschko.com/index.phtml I'm picking DLH to beat Vargas rather easily. Vargas has lost handspeed and I don't know if he has recovered from the Trinidad beating. When Vargas fought Rivera, he got knocked down early in the fight and almost knocked down again with a body shot. Rivera has never been known as a powerfull puncher and it was his first fight at 154. DLH is simply too fast for Vargas and DLH has fought much better fighters and has never been hurt. The only way Vargas wins, is risking it all and going for the KO, Vargas will not outbox DLH. Vargas has a chance to get the KO because DLH's new trainer, Mayweather, is changing DLH's style, particularly his defense. DLH has been fighting for too long to start making these drastic changes. I think that if Vargas does land a good punch, the new defense will quickly turn into the old defense and DLH will make the proper adjustments. Do you agree Elvis?
I always hate the love-fests after a fight. It was pretty bad after this one. At least Tyson was rather humble in defeat. Ah well, still good to see Tyson get his ass kicked. Time to hang it up, Mikey.
Why couldn't he get up then, if it was just a push? I didn't understand the ref continuously warning Lewis.....it seemed like Tyson was the one doing the holding, not the other way around.
I hoped Tyson would have enough for early attack- but that whole scene was sad from the moment Tyson started walking out to the ring- Tyson took a helk of a pounding- when his knees buckled and he kept his balance and stood back up for more punishment at least there was some heart there I guess. The craziest moment of the night- the calm (classy?) interview with the legendary J-GRaY. That he lost with some dignity shows Tyson had already begun planning the next phase of his career. He's alot smarter than we think- Tyson "I take my hand off to YOU" 20 mill in the bank- and people feel sorry for him...
cheetah -- please don't take your HAND off!!! that would be gross and would leave you with only one!!! what do you think the next phase of Tyson's career is? certainly not as a commentator....he had five minutes of humility...he's had a lifetime of "other things." He's not right...mentally. The man needs help, in my opinion.
Here's what I'd like to see happen: Tyson gets Lewis/HBO to agree to a rematch in 1-1.5 years if he can prove himself in the ring. Tyson goes back to Catskils, gives up all possessions, and trains like he's never trained before. Instead of getting in the ring with just anybody, Tyson lines up 1-2 matches against title contenders. First match: Oct/Nov 2002 Second match: March 2003 If he is successful, and Lewis has not retired/lost his belts, Tyson faces Lewis again. Because of the commitment Tyson has shown, people buy the PPV. If Tyson wins, we get Tyson Lewis 3. If Tyson loses, he retires or fights scrubs for the rest of his career.
yeah...maybe if he can go back to Philly and get Spinks to train him, things would be different. Maybe Spinks would let him wear the shorts that he used to wear. And in the middle of the night, Mike confronts himself in the mirror and says,"there is no tomorrow...there is no tomorrow...there is not tomorrow!" Yep...ever since his old trainer, Mick, died, he's never been the same.
Call me Nostra Possum! Pennwise I will take you up on your challenge but lets make it a little more interesting. Lets not just predict the major fights coming up. I will post all upcoming fights that have ranked fighters for the next six months and we can see if you know your boxing as well as you think you do. If your down just let me know.
