He's best suited as a defensive specialist and situational player. His minutes should depend on the match ups and situation, as is protocol for any NBA bench player.
i'm still laughing at the fact that a good portion of the board thought that drafting dorsey last year made hayes expendable. and then trading for artest. and then re-signing landry. i would be shocked if we were able to acquire a 7 footer able to impact the game as much as Hayes, unless as part of a larger trade.
That's what worries me. Chuck got a bit of press in the Lakers series... Now that people other than we Rockets fans know what he can do, I'm afraid some team will offer Morey something he's willing to take and Chuck will get traded. I fear no 7 footer to take his place.
I doubt you have anything to worry about. It's difficult to fathom how a 6'5 player could be one of the best post defenders and rebounders in the league unless you see him on a nightly basis. Many people still consider him a guy who just works really hard. They don't notice his ridiculous strength, timing, instinct, quickness and intelligence. Bringing in a big 7 footer would be more about offense. A guy like Gortat would be able to take advantage of all those gimme's around the basket that Scolandry missed due to the lakers' length.
A lot of team will take Chuck. He's not expensive but he's a reliable defender. He iwll be a perfect fit for championship team with superstars like Boston and Cavs.
Other fans might not have known about him, but I'm sure other GMs did. If he's traded, we can get someone of like value that we may be able to use more often. And, maybe Chuck could get more floor time too. I love Chuck, but he's a luxury for a 12th man. I don't see how it'd be bad for anyone that people got to see what Chuck could do, unless you're some crazy Chuck-Only-Fan who doesn't want to have to switch BBSes.
nothing really... Chuck wagon is still the best post defender in our team and he is a very underrated passer. A lot of people hate on Chuck Hayes simply because he does not do flashy dunks and score in bundles. Hayes is the only post defender that can shut a great scorer down when Landry, Scola and Yao are getting torched.
Chuck is a prime asset on defense and a huge liability on offense. If they get a decent enough 7 footer who can go both ways they'll move Chuck. The issue with Chuck's height obviously isn't as big a factor to people who actually watch Rockets games. Charles Barkley was all of 6'4" and change and he was dominant as a 4 and could play 5. He matched up on Shaq.
Not really. You're picking on two stupidly efficient guys. Landry shot 57% from the field in the regular season and 56% in the playoffs, including 60% against the Lakers. Scola shot 53% from the field in the regular season and 49% in the playoffs, including a blistering 57% against Portland's big front line while leading the team in scoring for the series. Sure, he shot 43% against the Lakers, but that's because we were using him as a go to low post option. The offense wasn't really bothered by a lack of size -- in fact Adelman seemed to prefer to go to the Brooks-Lowry backcourt. We just lacked scoring punch. Scola is an awesome guy to take advantage of mismatches and single coverage, but he's not a guy who can be the focal point of the offense night in and night out. Even in his superb game 6, he really just dominated the first half (and mainly the first quarter) before Brooks took over the 2nd half. Scola shot poorly because the defense was now keyed on him, not because the length particularly bothered him.
I agree if those other guys can't get it done hayes will always be able to step in and take over but he really needs to work on some more offense in my opinion. Also i don't think we need a 7 footer. A 6-11, 6-10 guy that can jump will do just fine.
I'm not picking on them at all. They have played well for us. I just feel that there were plenty of occasions where the ball was moved around perfectly and either Scola or Landry were in good position to score but just couldn't because there was a wall in front of them. Those are situations where a bigger player would just power it through or get a foul call. We've even seen Deke, a far worse offensive player than those two, convert in those situations. Size matters. Scola and Landry get most of their points from either mid-range jumpshots, beating their man with quickness and intelligence, or good ball movement. They were doing the same things yet they didn't have much of an advantage against the lakers' frontcourt, who are just as quick but much much longer. Scola didn't shoot particularly well (41%) in the first 3 games either, when Yao played and the focus wasn't even on him.
I wouldn't want to trade Hayes unless we got a great deal. Most teams probably don't give him enough credit to give up what I would want in return.
