Still just a report at this point. Nothing official.

Apparently, Peavey has reservations about playing for Guillen...

I saw on ESPN that there were RUMOURS; so is this official?

I have a hard time seeing Peavy getting along with Ozzie Guillen; that seems like a trainwreck in team chemistry right there.

The trade between the two teams is confirmed, but Peavy has to waive his NTC.

The teams have agreed..just waiting on Peavy's decision

    http://espn.go.com/chicago/story?id=4191562

Peavy called White Sox right-hander Scott Linebrink last night for his opinion about going to Chicago and got strong feedback, Gammons reported.

"Jake called me [Wednesday] afternoon to ask about what it's like here in Chicago," said Linebrink, according to ESPNChicago.com's Levine. "I think he's ready to move on, but I can't tell you for sure he's going to accept the deal. Losing 100 games, like they did last year, wears on a player.

"Right now, I'd say it's 50-50 as to whether he accepts it or not. He'll get with his family today and make a decision."

As a side note, what does it say about a manager when there are doubts that arguably the best pitcher in baseball even wants to play for him? Who would want a guy like that managing their team?

Of course it's all just speculation at this point...

I don't understood what one has to do with another. So what if Peavy is the best pitcher in baseball? That has nothing to do with his preference for a manager nor should that impact anyone else's opinion.

Um...they have everything to do with one another. If Peavy turns down the trade because Ozzie is the manager, then the White Sox lost an opportunity at the best pitcher in baseball because of their manager.

In baseball, it's understandable for a player to turn down a trade because of the location or maybe the quality of the team, but to me it's unheard of for a manager to be the reason. That says something about the manager and his reputation around the league.

Dayum, Padres getting raped in this one. Last I heard was that Peavy was 50-50 - I hope he turns it down. Pisses me off to see teams make out like bandits on deals unless it is my favorite team, of course! :D

    The deal is dead:

    via MLBtraderumors.com

    [rquoter]

Sources: Jake Peavy rejects trade to the White Sox

A source close to the Jake Peavy camp said today that the ace pitcher has notified the San Diego Padres that he will not accept the trade to the South Side, apparently killing the deal that would have sent four players west and put Peavy in black and white.

There is no indication of the Padres have notified the Sox yet, but the Padres have been informed.

The Peavy trade talk has been a whirlwind since early this morning, when the San Diego Union-Times broke the story that the veteran was called into the office of manager Bud Black and asked if he would push his no-trade clause to the side and play for the Sox.

Peavy spoke to Sox reliever Scott Linebrink on Wednesday about the Sox and manager Ozzie Guillen, gathering as much information as he could.

According to the source, Linebrink did a good selling job, and it seemed Peavy was leaning toward accepting the trade, but after an evening of thinking about it, as well as talking with his family, he was not ready to leave San Diego for an American League team.

Earlier today, it was thought to be even money that Peavy would accept the deal.

"At this point, it's 50-50," Linebrink said, adding he spoke to Peavy with Sox general manager Ken Williams blessings. "It's his decision and his family's, but given the trade rumors that haven't come to fruition, especially with the Cubs, I think he might want to get this behind him. I'm sure it was tough for him to go back [to San Diego, after the near-trade. He's probably ready to put on whatever uniform he's going to have."

The proposed deal to the Sox developed quickly over the last two days as the struggling Padres looked to move their star and some $63 million he is owned through 2012, including $11 million this season. But Peavy has veto rights over a trade, and sources in San Diego have said a deal isn't necessarily imminent.

Peavy's agent, Barry Axelrod, acknowledged the talks today to the San Diego Union Tribune, saying he has the "highest respect" for Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf and Williams.

But the paper indicated the rumored four-for-one deal did not appear to be imminent, with Peavy, who turns 28 next week, preferring to stay in the National League and perhaps even in Southern California, where the Mobile, Ala., native moved his family.

"I did have a chance to talk to him yesterday," Linebrink said. "He just had some questions about the team over here, and I was encouraged by Kenny to go ahead and talk to him and answer any questions he had. Of course I answered all his questions, but when it comes down to it, it's his decision.

I don't think anything I said is going to sway him one way or another. He's going to make the decision that's best for him and his career and his family." The reported deal is said to involve Sox lefthander Clayton Richard, another lefty in 2007 draft pick Aaron Poreda and two other minor leaguers.

Guillen, while cautioning that no trade had been concluded, said acquiring a pitcher like Peavy would signal to the team and fans the organization's commitment to winning.

"I always like pitching. I love pitching," Guillen said. "You have pitching and better defense, you have a chance to win. Having him in the rotation, it would be great. I've never seen him pitch [in a major league game.] I've seen him pitch one day against us in spring training and one day for the U.S. against Puerto Rico in the Classic. He's one of the best in the game, if not the best in the game, at least in the National League.

"If it happens, it's going to make our ball club a lot better. We've got to show those guys [in the clubhouse] we're pushing. We'll see what we can do about it. Kenny is doing stuff to make this ball club better." Peavy appeared all but traded to the Cubs before spring training, but a deal was never completed. Peavy had told the Padres then he would approve a deal to the Cubs, Atlanta Braves or Houston Astros. He has made clear his preference to remain in the National League, with Axelrod saying again today that preference remains.

But Linebrink said the stress of dealing with his almost certain trade for months could be wearing on the star.

"I know where he's coming from, being part of trade rumors for so long," Linebrink said. "He's probably looking at this as something he wants to put behind him. He told me he's really not looking to go anywhere else and he's kind of looking at this as his last move. he wants to be in a place where he has a chance to win and a place he's going to like for the remainder of his contract." That contract, negotiated before the 2008 season, gave Peavy a three-year extension beginning in 2010 when he will be paid $15 million. He is to be paid $16 million in 2011 and $17 million in 2012, with a club option of $22 million for 2013 or a $4 million buyout.

Guillen admitted being "surprised" that Reinsdorf would agree to take on that kind of financial commitment.

"It surprised me because the way the economy is going right now and the stock market, it's not easy to spend that kind of money. Believe me, they have their plan," he added of Reinsdorf and Williams. "When I talked to Kenny about the situation and Jerry, right away he said `do it.' That to me is great when you have the type of owner who wants to win." Linebrink described Peavy's questions as "very pointed. He had an idea of the information he wanted. Again, I don't think it comes down to the information I gave him. He probably has it in mind what he wants to do. He wanted to sleep on it and talk to his family." "I know it was tough for him to go back [to the Padres] after thinking the [Cubs] deal was done," Linebrink added. "He's probably ready to put this thing behind him in whatever uniform he's going to put on and go out there and go to work.

"I think he will fit in well here," he said. "Of course, his stuff speaks for itself. He's a Cy Young winner. He has the ability to go out and dominate the game and be a solid No. 1 guy. I would put his stuff up there with anyone's. He's a bulldog. He goes out there and he wants the ball.

He'll pitch late into he game and give you a chance to win.

"He'll take the pressure off guys like Gavin [Floyd] and [John] Danks. He allows them to go out there and do their work, without feeling like they have to carry the load. It's one more veteran guy for them to follow after, and I think it certainly would strengthen the staff. It allows [Mark] Buehrle to have another No. 1. You have two guys at the top [of the rotation] who are experienced and able to go out there and carry you deep into a game.

"When I was there, he was bitten by freak injuries sometimes," Linebrink added. "He's still relatively young. From what I've seen, he's still bringing it up there in the mid-90s. I don't think there's any reason to thing there is a [health] issue.

"He has has a curve ball and a change up to complement the hard stuff. He's gone out there with unhittable stuff several times. I saw him strike out 16 [batters] twice in one year. He's somewhat of a perfectionist, I guess you would say.

"At this point I would say it's 50-50. I would say that, given the trades that have not come to fruition, he's kind of running out of spots to go.

‘‘This may be a chance for him to get out of San Diego. He was there all last year and experienced that 100-loss season. I'm sure he doesn't want to do that again. This is probably looking like a pretty good opportunity for him to get out of there and get with a winning team."
