I weighed myself before and after my 2-mile run today. According to my scale I lost five and a half pounds running. Surely that's impossible, isn't it? You can't lose five-plus pounds in less than 20 minutes without some sort of amputation, can you? I mean granted it rained about 30 minutes before I ran, so the humidity was close to 100 percent and it was probably 90 degrees out. I do have a super-fast metabolism-- I've only gained 20 pounds since my 16th birthday and that's with six years of heavy drinking thrown in. But you'd have to be part hummingbird to pull that off.
I lost over 10 pounds during a 14 mile run once. I have never lost more than a 2-3 after a 2-4 mile run.
That's not too outrageous, Kagy. Just remember that for each pound you lost running is about a pint of water you lost. Make sure to stay hydrated. Make sure you drink plenty of water before (and during if possible) your run. If your running for more than an hour, stick with sports drinks.
BK: Maybe your scale is messed up???? X: Why drink sports drinks if running for more than an hour?? wouldnt water be better for you?
Thanks for the info, y'all. Hopefully it was just the humidity-- I run to keep in shape, but I'm not necessarily looking for a marathoner's body. x34: I am a religious water drinker. I can't run without being hydrated-- I hate the way it makes me feel and I've become so accustomed to carrying a squirt bottle on my runs that I can't imagine not having one with me.
Brian: How do you keep yourself motivated to run?? I dont see how someone could just get up and go run one day.
Sports drinks will help you keep your blood sodium levels up, which would diminish with only water. Because they have sodium in them, they also increase the desire to drink more (and thus stay properly hydrated). Kagy: Me too...I wonder if I could carry twice the water if I wore one of those "beer can" baseball caps???
WOW i didnt know that thanks for the tip, will sports drinks give you cramps though? i am guessing not since you will be hydrated
it is definetely the texas humidity... i lose about 6.5 pounds every morning after my daily 10 mile run on my LSD days (15+ miles) i lose up to 10 pounds (which I did today!) in the winter the numbes are less (texas winters, relatively speaking of course)
i don't like sports drinks b/c i don't like the sugar and calories they carry along with them... plain old H20 is good for me... i drink about 130 ozs. a day
Your like my U.S. History teacher this year, he loves water. He was drinking like 1.5 20 oz water bottles on good days just in my class and he had like 4 classes. He is also the head wrestling coach so he probably has even more for after school.
if I don't drink that much, I would be in trouble... I probably sweat 80% of that much out every day while running... i don't particularly like water, just forced to drink it to stay hydrated!
Man i wish i could get into the habit of running and drink lots of water, how do you keep yourself motivated to run drag?
"drag"??? is that a subtle dig at me?? i just love running, period... i started it in order to lose some of that freshman 15 (that multiplied out over 4 years) after i graduated from college... but i just fell in love with it... i love to run, just like i love to play basketball and football... it's the high you get in the middle of a run and the incredible high you get when you finished... that feeling that you did something extremely good for your body and health... i really can't explain it, it just feels so good!
LOL my bad sort of forgot the p in there. But what do you mean it feels good? I use to run cross country at my middle schools and when i ran it never felt good when i ran, i just knew that it was helping my body. Or is that what you mean? like it feels good to run cuz you know you are helping your body?
i think its an adrenaline rush, i.e. "the runner's high"... the combination of adrenaline from exercising and getting the heart pumping, the idea that you are taking care of your health (and lowering your fat, cholesterol and RHR) all rolled up into one... i really can't explain it well... i'm sure if you do a search on "runner's high" you'll get a medical explanation.
Endorphin rush. That's what it's all about. Strenuous exercise prompts the brain to release a ton of endorphins, which stimulate sensations of pleasure. I love running for that reason.
