I want to pick up Spanish as my third language. I've looked at Rosetta Stone and they must be extremely effective because their packages cost so much more than the ones sold at bookstores.

Has anyone used Rosetta Stone? How did it work for you? Would you prefer that over a college course (which costs even more)?

Take a course, interaction with someone who know how to speak it fluently is way more effective. Especially when you get to advanced spanish, what is your second language?

My second language is English. I have thought about taking a course, but I don't have the time (and money :( ). I want to learn it as a hobby, a few minutes a day.

I am thinking about buying one for Chinese. I know some already, but my college does not really offer what I would like (they only teach traditional). In my experience though, college foreign language classes are jokes and wastes of time

My son is learning Japanese, believe it or not, with Rosetta Stone. I can't understand anything he says, besides the few things everyone knows, so who knows if it's working? He says it is, at any rate. It's supposed to be very interactive. He uses headphones with a microphone and his laptop. Freaky!

I just got the Spanish version for my birthday, but I haven't installed it yet. I work with a lot of native spanish speakers, so I'm hoping the combination of the two will get me speaking decent spanish before too long...

It takes to long to learn compared to books. Also you do not learn the stuff you would need most if you actually went to a spanish speaking country. Just get down to the dirty act of learning vocab.

It is LESS expensive than a college course.

You type and write much better English than most people here, I noticed. It is baffling to me how most people who were born and raised here don't speak their OWN language well or coherently... but most foreigners do. I would recommend to TRY IT.
Have you even SEEN or USED Rosetta?

Seriously, you say "more effective"... is it because you've tried it? I don't agree with you. I have it. It is HIGHLY effective and it works with you.

It's alright. But you have to be pretty motivated as the exercises get boring fast as they are so similar to each other.
