That's it in a nutshell. That's why some people work 30 yrs and get a crappy gold watch and some of us are hunters and retire at 35. Its about the ring and u sacrifice good and solid with beeter and really good. ibm, I bring up marion cause with teams hesitating with cap room, he will have to settle for about 8m. He's the kind of player that will play good defense, slash and move without the bal, run the break and finish around the basket. Oh yeah, he aint back tapping, he's grabbing the damn rebound. S&T with shane and barry and start the contract at 8.5 m and the rockets are now a more diverse team.
That is exactly why you have to be open to trading him this summer, this is as high as his value will get. I'd love to keep Battier and let him be our Bruce Bowen for the next 4 or 5 years, but if you can get someone younger, more athletic, and with a better offensive game, you really have to consider it. I completely trust Morey, he will definitely do what's best for this team/franchise, he is a smart GM who knows how to turn a lump of coal into a diamond.
i have no idea how much $$ marion wants in his own mind, and how much the market will place a tag on him. but barry + shane is something i'd consider, if doable. and championship or nothing? yeah, that's all we fans want, isn't it? and i know you're an all-or-none type of guy, but in reality, not every nba team operates like that. if we had paul allen as the owner, things might be a little different.
Do some research before you make these posts, especially if you are gonna get upset about people disagreeing with you. You make these statements like Battier didnt help us in the Dallas series but he wasnt even on the team. You say the two Jazz series were basically 2 on 5 when Yao didnt even play in the second series. Then you make this 50+ win comment. In the three years that Battier has been on the team we have won 53, 55, and 52 games. In the five years before Battier got here we won 34, 51, 45, 43, and 28 games. That hardly qualifies as a team that won 50+ games every season. And dont say some of those seasons were only due to injury cuz in all three of Battiers seasons here there has been a significant injury if not multiple injuries to the best players. Do I think that Battier is the sole reason for the team's success in his three years here? Definitely not. But dont discredit everything he provides and then give credit to guys like Brooks, Scola, and Landry. Cuz according to your point that the Rox are really no better now with Battier then they were without him, then the same could be said about the other three guys cuz they have been here almost as long as Battier has. OMR said it best, trading Battier is unlikely to return you a player that is going to significantly upgrade this team. I just dont get how no one complained about when teams had Deke in his prime. He made big bucks and offered very little offense but was a great defender. You needed that back in the days of post play. Now the play is all about the perimeter which makes perimeter defenders just as important as post defenders were back in the past. Battier is an elite perimeter defender.
The problem there is Marion has a past of having issues not being a "star" on his own team. He will never be that here. If anything, the past couple years have shown he may have been pumped up by getting to play with Nash. I think he is worth 8M a year, but my guess is he is going to cause all sorts of problems feeling he is underpaid and underutilized on this team. Even if we could get him for 8M a year I would rather it be at the expense of Ron then Shane. I dont think anyone can doubt that Shane brings a calming influence to the team. You know if he was asked to come off the bench he wouldnt complain about it unlike Artest did and Im sure Marion would do. Marion can give you better rebounding then Artest. I think he can give the same defensive impact as well. He can hit the three as good as Ron and finish better at the rim and slash more. He wont bring the same toughness and bully attitude but just my opinion he fits better on this team with Shane, then he would on this team with Ron.
that is where i agree with you , ,Indeed ,he is that typical Duke-styled player ,who is disciplined ,hardworking player on court ,i believe he will be the leader in the locker room after Deke was gone ,we need a talented man on court to be a commander ,who is not shane built to be ,but he is really a key chess to Princeton .if we can't attract some born leader ,maybe we should change a coach ,like Brown .
I think Shane Battier will have a longer career then Ron. I think eventually Ron's style of play will catch up to him, and injuries are more likely. I can see Battier playing until his late 30's, not sure about Ron. I am not sure how this is relevant to the topic, but saw some conversation about moving Battier vs Ron. I would hate to see Battier go.
I think people need to understand this is not about moving Shane because he's a bad player but because we need other things. There are teams that could see a more significant jump in their defense by adding Battier while we still would have some good defenders (Ron, Lowry, Hayes and Yao) without him. We could stand to lose some defense if it means we could make major gains in our offense.
Agree wholeheartedly. I would consider moving him -- I would consider doing a lot of things -- but, he will never have a higher value than he has right now. As much as Morey may love him, he's not married to him either -- there were rumors last offseason of Battier+pick for Outlaw+pick (to get Brandon Rush). What you do with Battier is to me a function of what happens with Artest, McGrady, and a little bit of Wafer (in that order). If you keep Artest, Battier becomes more expendable -- especially if you feel McGrady will be TMac again or you can get a legit #2 scorer for him via trade. For the sake of depth, Wafer's asking price will affect how flexible you can be in your return for Battier, and thus his tradeability.
Some of you guys are completely ignoring and/or taking for granted the things he brings to this team that will never show up on a stat sheet or that 99.9% of us will never see unless you're a journalist or TV reporter with access to the locker room.
Battier with who. Think about what you say before you type. Battier with brooks... battier with landry? And who would we get? brandon Roy? Joe Johnson? Dwayne wade? Carmelo anthony. No not one of those guys. What that will get us is travis outlaw. Corret maggete. Rudy gay... that is the kind of player available for battier and brooks. Do you think that will improve this team. If you do you are sadly mistaken. These trade this guy and this guy sucks threads are so stupid. We just split the last for games with last years western conference champs without TMAC and Yao. We do not need to do **** and everyone will have to respect the fact we are legitimate contenders for the title next year! Do you not get that. We just kicked the up and coming Blazers without a Tmac. We just took the lakers to 7 games without Yao... this team only needs to be healthy even if you trade Yao and Tmac there are no guarantees of that happening. If we just return the players we have and get healthy we will be better. Simple no brainer solutions are the answer not stupid hair trigger mistakes. Yao needs a legitimate back up so he plays 30 minutes a game and less when there are back to backs. We need un upgrade on Wafer. I know eveeryone loves him but he is an offensive minded player with no defense and still very immature. Wafer is gone addition by subtraction. We need Tmac to return to his early years form which I think is possible. But we need him to comeback with a dedication and attitude hehas never shown before. And I think will never happen. SOwe trade him. WHo wants Tmac no one. Who wants to wipe off 21 million off their books almost everyone. NJ is losing money they would do it in a secnd. They kill 2 birds with one stone. Carter is just a waste with visions of Lebron on the Horizon. And they save money for the future. Is he the best we can get? I do not know but he is a pretty damn good option. He is still elite sg. He shoots for a better average and while not perfect he is a far cry better than this years Tmac. If we can do better let us go for it. But always remeberthis team is on the brink of championships. And it is because they are a team and not a bunch of egos. Do not break that for some pie in the sky that doesn't really exist. We showed we can compete for it all when healthy without Tmac let us upgrade Tmac, resign Artest, get a back up for Yao get healthy and go for the gold. Anything more is destroying a good thing.
sigh, spin spin and more spin. I don't care how you want to spin the situation at the end of the day he scored his average FG%. That just tells me, Battier didn't do as great a job as most people are making it out to be. No knock on Battier and his hard work, but thats just the reality.
Rox fans are so crazy. Just want to get rid of every one in the team even including the biggest contributor in the last 12 years I really dont understand
