29'er is way to expensive for his price range

check out local craigslist as well as cities close by like austin (that has a huge cycling community)

There is nothing wrong with the Motobecane, and 600 is plenty for a 29er.

Take your time and ride some different models; then go with one that feels great to you. Give a Rockhopper a try...I think a new one is in your price range.

Ok, just picked up my new bike today from REI. I rode a couple different models but the feel of the 29er was unmistakable. So I spent a little more than I intended to ($729) but I'm really happy with the purchase. I got the Marin Alpine Trail 29er in the 20.5 in frame. Looked forward to breaking this baby in! Thanks guys for all the suggestions.

Let me know what places you end up liking to ride. I'm moving closer to Memorial in a month and may get into biking, also.

I am glad you gave the 29er a shot. Seriously the advantages for people our size is just to hard to overcome. Even with better forks on 26" bikes. Just wait till you hit some roots and just keep on rolling.
