I voted for the last one because it sounds funny. But I know for sure the Lakers have zero chance of upsetting us! Go Rockets!
This is the forces of good vs the forces of evil, and the fate of the world hangs in the balance. I can't overstate the magnitude of this upset.
That sonic team didn't fair too well against the bulls. The lost the 3 first games of the series. If you call falling down 3-0 to the greatest team on earth impressive...then hey, ok, ther'es nothing i can say. By the way, 3 of the 4 bulls wins were blow-outs.
But this Laker team won 65 games. They are relatively healthy and until this series, they were\are still the favorite to win the championship. Hell, even McGrady picked the Lakers to win it all. Our team on the other hand is comprised of Ron Artest, an undersized point guard, no true center, and a bunch of role players. Our two best players (both potential top 10 in the NBA?) are on the bench and our back up center is retired. With Yao I don't see this as one of the greatest upsets but we will essentially be winning 3 of the 4 games without Yao. That's historic. It isn't one game but three against a Laker team that was more often than not picked to beat us in 6 games or less with the best center in the NBA still playing. It may not be Buster Douglas material but it is pretty damn close.
watching this lakers team, it doesn't surprise me that they're tied 3-3. i think it's a helluva lot easier to win 65 games today than it was back then. i'm not discounting what the Rox are doing...I LOVE IT!!! but i don't have a lot of respect for this Lakers team.
It'd be tremendous. The energy this series has brought to the city is pretty damn sweet to see . It reminds me a lot of when the Astros went into uncharted territory in 2005. Either way it goes down, GO ROCKETS!
I noticed it but was hoping no one else would notice my spelling issues. Revolution....can anyone correct it for me?
You forgot Golden State Beating the Mavs two years ago in Round 1. IMO that was a greater upset than the Nuggets beating the Sonics since it was a 7 game series where the odds favor the more talented team. As far as comparing this to a historical upset I'm going to take the Miracle on Ice. In previous meetings this season up until the playoffs the Lakers have looked like the Soviet team while the Rockets have looked like the Americans with the Soviets dominating. In the playoffs though the Rockets have shown their true resilience. Also the Miracle on Ice game wasn't the final but a semi-final so like the 1980 US Hockey team even if we get past the Lakers we still have some more business to take care of.
I know, that one was intentional. I felt the Sonics losing to the Nuggets was a bigger upset despite being a 5 game series. The reason being that the difference between a 1 and 8 seed back then was much bigger than it is today. Today, you have 7's knocking off 2's and such. The Western Conference the past 5 years has been one of parity. Back then, with the league smaller than it is today and the concentration of talent in a handful of teams, i felt it was a bigger upset. I agree this is similar to the miracle on ice, but without the cold war backdrop, it will be hard to match that outside of rocket nation.
This would definitely be an upset IF the Rockets win today, but not up there with the greatest upsets ever. We did play part of the series with Yao Ming (42.8%) and IF we win today, it would be barley sqeaking by. Also we are a #5 seed, and we won 53 games ourselves so its not like we were really a marginal playoff team. The Pistons in 2004 is still a bigger upset because even though they had slighly better players than this team, they dismantled the Lakers. It wasn't even close. That 2004 Laker team had knocked off the defending champs of the Spurs, and the #1 seed. The 1986 Rocket team is a bigger upset, and the 2007 Mavericks getting beat handily by the Warriors. They Warriors barely squeaked in the playoffs with a 42-40 record. They beat a Dallas team pretty handily in which two of the games were blowouts and it was the first time that a team with that many wins (67) was knocked off in the first round. I sure hope we win today.
I'll compare it to this <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/RcL6DwSufMI&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/RcL6DwSufMI&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> We found the little hole
I picked the Miracle on Ice but I think it would be a bigger upset than that. Any team can win ONE game against overwhelming odds but this team will have won THREE games without its two best players including a game 7 on the road against a #1 seeded, 65 win team. I can't think of any upset that would even compare. Fans would be talking about it for decades.
