This possibly abandoned dog has been hanging out at my house since last night. My sister put out some water and some dog snacks from when we took care of a friends dog last year. Anyways, I called the SPCA and they told me to call Animal Control. Animal Control seems to be more concerned with whether or not I am being annoyed with the dog being there than the welfare of the animal..."Stop feeding her, she'll probably go away." How do I get this dog somewhere that she can be examined and put up for adoption? She's very friendly but a bit wary for possible mistreatment.
you already have dinner prepared? J/K not sure I thought ClutchCityReturns worked in some sort of animal shelter type place maybe he could help you out
You can take her to the Houston Humane Society http://www.houstonhumane.org/ and if she is able to be adopted they will try and find a home. However, there is no guarantee that she will be deemed adoptable. Please do not take her to the City Pound, her chances go down drastically there. Can you hang on to her for a couple of days and put up posters in the neighborhood and call the local vets? I have had great luck finding owners of dogs by doing that. Find a sympathetic coworker, neighbor or friend, if possible to take her in the short term.
www.specialpalsshelter.org takes "unwanted" pets. Give it a try for a while first, though. If it doesn't work, no harm no foul, methinks.
Is she a total mutt or could she be a purebreed? There are tons of breed rescue organizations in the area that will take in dogs of a specific breed. Sometimes it just has to be close. Post a picture if you are unsure, and we can help you decide.
I'm pretty sure she's a mutt. I told my brother to take some pictures, he should be emailing them to me soon.
If you are willing to foster the dog, email me through the board and I can help you out. Foster would mean basic board and food as the dog is put up for adoption, where, depending on the dog, adoption could happen within a few weeks or could take months. If you are not willing to foster the dog, I'd highly encourage you to do your best to find a no-kill shelter or group...and you will need to be adamant about it. Pretty much every recognizable shelter out there in Houston are kill shelters - they may have adoption programs, but only a small fraction of the animals go there and even then it isn't a guarantee.
Try calling Citizens for Animal Protection (CAP) - I got my dog through them and they were very nice and helpful. There may be a fee if you want to drop off the dog with them, but at least you'd know they aren't just going to wait 10 days and then euthanize the animal. http://www.cap4pets.org/
I think what I'll do is enlist my cousin and his truck's help in getting her to the Humane Society later today or tomorrow.
How big is she. Do you think she is full grown. She looks like a beautiful animal. Might be interested in taking her in.
The dog looks awfully healthy to be a real stray - although it's possible someone could have abandoned her recently (that's become more common during this economy, unfortunately). My guess is that she's a mix of Australian Shepherd and a few other breeds. Given the popularity of the breed and the good outward condition, she appears to be a very adoptable dog.
I don't think the Houston Humane Society is no-kill, so you should probably go a different route. She does look healthy and well fed, so I'd agree that she could just be a stray. Perhaps she has a micro-chip. Also, why would that dog require the use of a truck for transportation?
Aww... I love dogs so much. The way I drive to work in the morning seriously bums me out as I see I ton of stray, obviously malnourished dogs, sometimes in packs. They cross these busy intersections, and sure enough, I see lots of roadkill, too. It breaks my heart.
