I'm trying to translate a phrase from English into Latin. The online translators have been no help, and I would like to get an exact translation if possible, not just a close one. If you know Latin and wouldn't mind helping, please e-mail me: jgillard@nf.sympatico.ca Thanks.
i took latin for two years and i suck at it forget what you need translated use "ad astra per aspera" it means reach for the stars and you'll go far.
A serious suggestion: If you know a priest, ask him. Otherwise, check with your local Catholic church to see if someone can help. If they can't help, call up a seminary.
Did you hear they're teaching japanese next year ? That's the rumor. And they're canceling latin. What ? I tried to get latin canceled for five years. "It's a dead language," I'd always say. Well, I guess they finally heard you.
fadeaway i am going into latin 3 next year, and my dad is a latin teacher tell me what phrase you need and i can help you out.
My high school Latin teacher once called me a "Latin Scholar." Of course, he was kidding, since I rarely turned in my homework before the last day of the grading period. He was a pretty cool guy. As long as you got the homework in some time or another before the end of the grading period, he would accept it without penalty. He just wanted us to learn the material. When we did so wasn't important-- within reason. That was first year Latin in 10th grade. Then my teacher died over the summer--a heart attack, I believe. I hated that. He was one of the best teachers I ever had. My next teacher was straight out of Rice, and you could tell. She hadn't exactly mastered this thing they call teaching. She was obviously an intelligent person, but not much of a teacher at that point. That's okay, however, I'm pretty sure she was convinced I wasn't much of a student at that point.
OK, guess I should speak up to defend my alma mater here. Except, actually, you're right. I found many students and faculty there with the elitist, intellectual, "we're better than the rest of the world" mindset. Faculty and TA's often couldn't teach, didn't care, and considered undergrads to be lower life forms unless they were already making A's (in which case they are the ones who don't need the help). This is actually what shaped my decision to become a teacher - seeing bad examples and promising to do better than that, and try to make it right for my students. Guess I rebelled against part of the Rice thing, though if you find the other non-status-seeking Rice students they're the coolest people ever. Back to the topic - Latin was cool but I only took it for one summer. Wish I'd taken more. Latin is a dead language, dead as it can be. First it killed the Romans, and now it's killing me. In vino es veritas. Semper ubi sub ubi. O fortuna, velut luna, statu variabilis...
my magistra was kickass! she was from romania and spoke 12 languages FLUENTLY. sometimes she got a little crazy, but im going to miss her saying "can you believe this?" all the time.
Accidit Stercus!!!!!! Lol, my latin teacher put that on the board this year and we figured out what it meant and he just started laughing, my latin teacher is sweet. Even if he is hard, cant wait for Latin 3 next year since he teachers years 2,3,4
I had Latin for six years (my first language) and I am pretty good at it. Well, I was, that is about 15 years ago...but I can give it a shot. Just mail me through the profile thing.
Won't work. I'll just put the phrase here: "Some men are born leaders. Others must become leaders by constant effort." I've done a direct word for word interpretation using an online Latin-English dictionary, but I'm pretty sure the grammar is wrong.
I've had 3 years of spanish in high school and after a year without it not sure i want to start it back up again in college.. anyone know if first year latin in college is very difficult?
Latin Rules! The only thing that bothers me is all the different verb endings and declensions. It takes a while just to write one sentence in Latin.
Latin does rule, and verb endings arent that hard cuz my latin 2 teacher crammed us with verb ending charts this year, we had like 5 quizzes of them for like 5 weeks straight. declensions arent that hard, i just hate memorizing, other than that its fun.
