I know we are a biased sampling. But a friend of mine said that football is by far the most popular sport in America [US] I think Basketball is. I love both. Football was king in the 80s and maybe early 90s . . but IMO basketball has taken over Rocket River
If anything, it was the other way around...basketball was king with Bird, Magic, Jordan, but football has now easily taken over IMO.

If you're talking about the most popular sport among all age groups and races, then basketball is the most popular. Basketball is easily the most popular recreational sport. It's simple to get a small group of players together and play a pickup game, and basketball is easier to learn than football or baseball, which makes it easier for kids to get involved. Baseball is in trouble right now. Another potential labor dispute may turn off more fans. Also, baseball is losing interest with children, which explains declining little league baseball participation. The fact that little league baseball is more dangerous than youth basketball or soccer is also another bad trend for baseball.

You only have to watch once a week to keep up, so more people can. With baseball or basketball, you have to commit quite a few nights to watch all the games and really follow the team closely.
Yup. Also, football games are perfect in length. I find that baseball games are too long. The fact that football is only played 4 months out of a year, at intervals of only two days per week makes us anticipate and appreciate the game more.
While I know this is not a good measure of a sport's popularity, isn't NASCAR the most highly attended of all sports?
I guess I would have to say football but that is for this country. Overall it has to be soccer...other sports aren't even close to soccer in terms of popularity over the world.
