But again, who cares? If they get the entertainment of it, why does it matter to anyone else if they are a bandwagon fan or not or lived through the bad times? Are you somehow a better person because you watch a team when they are bad? If the point is to be entertained, and the bandwagon fan gets entertained when their team is winning and finds something else entertaining to do when the team is losing, why is that a bad thing for them? It seems to me like they are just maximizing their total entertainment.

i'm a lakers fan.... but my preference for teams goes like this

    1. rockets
    2. lakers
    3. bulls

before i start i'm making it known that i'm cheering for the rockets in this series. i guess i'm not as diehard as some of you guys since i like 3 teams instead of just one but i actually live in the LA area (since 2005) and lived in the Chicago area during the Jordan days (90s), hence it is hard to not get swept up by your local hometown team (and the clippers do not qualify as a team worthy of cheering for in the LA area). btw i still like the bulls and i really did cheer for them against celtics (go drose!) this year and loved it when they spanked miami a few years back in the playoffs.

however i did live in sf in between chicago and la, but it was way too hard for me to cheer for the warriors (nothing to be proud of really there), so i chose a non hometown team to cheer for during that time, which happened to be the rockets.

i've became a hardcore rockets fan since 2002 when the rockets got yao ming. i bought a yao ming jersey that year and that's the only basketball jersey i own.

so anyways to answer your question since i technically qualify as "lakers fan"

    1- yes
2- 2005 when i moved there, and believe me they sucked that time since it was the first year they traded away shaq
3- kobe (my childhood idol was jordan, and kobe is the most like him, that's one of the biggest draws for me, i grew up in chicago watching jordan and to be watching kobe now gives me some flashbacks although jordan > kobe still :p)
4- kobe hitting that shot going up 3-1 on the suns in 2006. getting pau gasol for free.
5- the lakers then proceeding to lose to the suns in 7 and sucking it bad in game 7. the choke job that occured last year in boston.

i like more than one team, but *shrug*. that's what happens when you move around a lot :)

Also, I agree that a percentage of Lakers fan I run into here in the streets of Lakers country, are a-holes and ignorant. But I personally enjoy watching the Lakers because I'm a fan of basketbball.

There have been times where the Lakers play beautiful basketball and are a joy to watch. Which brings me to my next point about Kobe. I really appreciate watching Kobe play. Because I know that he is the greatest in the world (atleast he has been in the past 3 years). And I considered myself lucky to live in near L.A. and being able to watch every Lakers game and Kobe play bball.

But yesterday's game is another story. Like I said before I am a bball fan. And yesterday the Rockets brought their a game and played beautifully. Whereas the Lakers played like an ass, like they sometimes do.

Games like yesterday's game 4 are examples of why I hate the Lakers sometimes and root for the team who plays the right way (i.e. the Rockets of yesterday)

BTW Landry is by far my favorite Rocket.

Like I said, your view and many others' view of being a fan is to be entertained at a point in time which is fine. I personally believe in an element of loyalty when you are talking about being a true fan but that's just my view. I don't think I'm better for it but I'm sure a lot of people that root for the front runner and are on the winning side somehow think they're better...
