Rockets plan to send contingent to China

The Rockets' next step toward taking Yao Ming with the first draft pick could be their longest.

The Rockets hope to send a group of team officials to Shanghai, China, to meet with Chinese basketball officials, although there are no plans yet to work out Yao, and Rockets representatives may not even see him.

"Things have been progressing well. I think it's time we got together," Rockets general manager Carroll Dawson said. "We want them to know where we stand and let them know we understand Yao Ming's importance to the Chinese national team."

Dawson, Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich, team attorney Michael Goldberg and director of team communications Nelson Luis are expected to represent the Rockets, a move Dawson admitted was "a pretty good indication" of what the Rockets hope to do with the first pick.

Dawson said Yao's representative and cousin, Erick Zhang, arranged the meeting after talks with Chinese officials went well enough to move to the next step.

The 7-5 center is touring with the Chinese national team and is not expected to be in Shanghai when the Rockets' representatives are there.

The Rockets have offered strong indications since the draft lottery that they consider Yao to be the top prize. Next week's meeting could be a key to securing the clearance to allow Yao to play through an NBA postseason.

Dawson said the progress on Yao "has been good."

"We're optimistic enough," Dawson said. "We think it's the right time to meet face-to-face.

"We've got to find out if there is any mystery. We think that the Chinese government is ready to do this. We're going to find out. If they give their blessings, the guarantee that the league is looking for, we'll see.

"Both sides want certain things. We want an uninterrupted season and playoffs. They want us to understand how important he is to the Chinese national team, and we do."

All Right! I'm so freaking pumped up now! We're going to Draft a guy at #1 without ever having met him! Man, come on people, raise the roof, we're making history and the communist in China are making the Rockets their b****es! Wooohooo! Damn, I can't believe there are still people who are weary of Ming. Yipee!, the first time this guy comes to Houston will be right before the Season starts. It's a no brainer man, this is the best thing that could ever happen to us.

As long as we get the situation with China cleared up, I frankly don't care if the Rockets get to see Yao Ming or not.

Note to Rockets management: This is all a big suckup/PR show leading to (or covering for) a private workout and medical exam, right? The Chinese government and league just don't want you to make it public because it would hurt their pride, right? 'Cause you'd be dumb to buy a house without inspecting it or buy a car without driving it or marry a woman without meeting her, right?

Pro-Yao does not mean blind or imprudent. We are talking about the #1 pick in the draft. No exam, no workout, no hire.

WILL, I agree 100%. I am not anti-ming, I am just anti-getting screwed. It would be stupid for the Rockets to not see Ming during their visit. If they are already in Shanhai  , then take a flight to wherever Ming is!!!! duh!!

i do not see what the big deal is with the chinese pride being damaged over our wanting to check out Ming. We do it with all players entering any draft in the MLB, NFL, NHL and NBA. Although, we did not personally check out Griffin before we drafted him, we had official medical reports from the league office that were available, as was all the psycological data and background investigations. they should understand that this is part of the process in a multi-million dollar investment. where is the pride in this?

windlandsea...fill me in on the psycology here????

Actually you'd be dumb to buy a house in this market period, dumb to buy a car when you can lease, and just plain dumb to marry any woman :p

Let's assume that wherever Yao is touring is closer to Shanghai than to, say, Houston.

If we're going to Shanghai, let's add a little excursion to Yao's location to check him out. That is, unless we're counting on flying him from China to Houston to check him out -- and not expecting a bunch of other teams to demand workouts with him while he's in the U.S. Imagine China's reaction. Wouldn't that be fun.

nobody complained about EG being drafted without a personal workout, because he had worked out for the league, been followed through his senior year and freshman year at SH and had been seen many times by scouts. He also had a background check done, psycological test and physical exam that was available for all to review.

The thing with Ming is that a) access to him is more difficult b) no physical by any league official c) not much info about personal life/background investigations....

I am not worried about his personal workout, though I understand. I am more concerned about his physical. Being a very very large man, means his health is more suspect than a 6'10" guy....Physical has to be mandatory before I would draft him.
