If he did all those things, I wonder what Orci and Kurtzman did.

Is Tuvak from Star Trek Voyager the son of Spock and Ohura?

During the whole movie I was like that has to be Eric Bana, but for some reason I thought he was too accomplished of an actor to take on a risky role in a Star Trek movie. He must have had a lot of confidence in Abrams.

Sklyar was awesome as Spock. Actually not all that much different in demeanor than his Heroes character.

Dammit man, I'm a doctor not a movie critic!

Sorry Juan, but I just disagree about Bones. I don't care if we was overacting, I thought he played that role perfectly.

I hated the relationship with Spock. I don't care that this is a revamp, there was no explanation offered as to why THIS world's Spock would be in romantically involved with someone like that.

I'm probably alone in this, but I thought the Star Wars iconography was the lamest part of the movie. There were so many shots of Kirk that were rotoscoped from Luke Skywalker, I was honestly expecting him to curl up inside the monster on the ice planet for warmth.

I think the Spock relationship thing was part of the bigger aim:
more focus on the characters, Spock in particular. Up until know, Spock was almost devoid of emotion - Abrams wanted to revisit that. It was being hammered all throughout - Vulcans DO have emotion (Spock moreso?), but are raised to bottle it up.

His interest in his father's wife played into that as well.

I saw it. Guess I'm in the minority here, but I thought it was "ok" at best.

Bad one liners, over acting on some major characters, the whole time travel thing, too many attempts at cheap jokes. I didn't think it was terrible per say, but it's FAR from the masterpiece people are making it out to be. The special effects were really good.

    I'd give it a 5.5 out of 10.

From the previous series there is no relation to Spock as Tuvak is a full Vulcan and not some mutt. Yes there are black Vulcans.

Since this movie is an alternate timeline anything is possible.

Just read the wiki-synopsis of the Countdown comic series that builds up to the movie. I think it will make a lot more sense when I go see it now.

Like Batman Begins, this film was exactly what this franchise needed.

The movie strayed from Star Trek lore without betraying it's roots. That's tough to do, but it was done flawlessly. I like how they didn't sell out the end and put things back the way they were originally.

the timeline has changed, but that doesn't mean the events that happened in the television show and subsequent movies never happen now. I think they still do, maybe not in their entirety, maybe not in the same way, but they still do...just like Kirk still becoming the Enterprise Captain, and him and Spock developing a very special friendship...the destinations might be the same but the journey to get there is a little different. And we actually get to see different sides of these characters.

A couple of things that stood out. The opening sequence was especially emotional. The use of sound was amazing, from the blips and beeps you hear from the ships to the phasers and best of all, the absence of sound in a few of the space sequences. The characters did great homage to their original counterparts while trying to create their own uniqueness along the way. All the one-liners and cameos. Hearing the backstory of how McCoy got the nickname Bones. And the final ending sequence, with Nimoy's voice over transitioning into the original theme. A nice touch.

My only gripe is Bana's character was one-dimensional, and I'm hoping in subsequent sequels, they'll create villains that truly test the crew's mettle. This wasn't the movie for that, obviously. Just like Batman Begins, this a reimagining of the origins, a character-driven film. So hopefully, the next Trek follows the framework of Dark Knight, where the Enterprise is treated to a villain that tests their brawn and brains. Just as the Joker is Batman's primary nemesis, let's bring back some Klingons and some Birds of Prey!

They are thinking of remaking Wrath of Khan with Javier Bardem...

    http://www.filmjunk.com/2009/05/05/should-javier-bardem-play-khan-in-a-star-trek-sequel/

JJ Abrams + Javier Bardem + successful reboot = big sequel pay off... like The Dark Knight kind of pay off.

Very enjoyable movie, but there were two things that didn't make a lot of sense...

    1. Why does a brand new, top-of-the-line spaceship have a crew filled with new recruits? You have a super-Captain and then a bunch of inexperienced guys assigned to your top ship? Of course, they have all these actors for the next billion sequels so it works out well for the future.

    2. The bad guy (Nero?) has to be one the stupidest villains of all time. First off, why do you hate Spock so much? He was *trying* to save your freaking planet. And he was so dedicated that he even went through a black hole in the process. It's not like he was trying to blow up Romulus. You want to kill 6 billion people because he wasn't fast enough? And then, instead of spending 25 years waiting to get revenge, why not just go warn your freaking planet and save it instead?! Moron.

Outside of that, pretty fun movie!

I'm jonesing for some more Star Trek after seeing this. Rotten Tomatoes ranked the top 10 ST movies here.

I'll definitely rewatch Khan (probably watched it when I was 10 or something). But First Contact is ranked first? I was under the impression all the ST:NG movies weren't that good.

    1. You missed this. The Enterprise wasn't ready to be commissioned yet, but the real fleet was off on a mission and they had to staff the ships that were in port with the recruits that were on the ground.

First Contact is really good. I was actually ok with Generations as well to be honest.

my favorite though is the Undiscovered Country.

The biggest plot hole for me was Spock himself flying the nova mission solo. Like there wasn't anyone else for the job.

The Next Gen movies weren't all bad, there just wasn't the love for the characters like the originals. That and the movies were all almost like 2 hr episodes. Next Generation actually had some episodes in the series that were more epic than the movies (minus First Contact).

Still, Wrath of Khan owns. Had the most teeth, and the most emotional scene of any in the franchise.

Yes, that's my favorite too. A great way for the original cast to go out.

Non-Trekies had to be tought that Kirk is a complete 1 in a trillion bad ass. Otherwise the stuff that comes later will not make as much sense. He has to be established very early on as the Alpha dog leader what ever he is doing ,no questions asked.
