I agree...there was something about it I couldn't quite put my finger on. I also got tired of the shining light effect that keep shining into the camera from behind the actors. Overall I thought it was an enjoyable movie, but likely won't be in my top 10 at the end of the year. I thought the trailer for the newTerminator movie looked better than anything I saw in Star Trek. Spoiler Did Spock and Uhura get it on in the oriiginal? There certainly seemed to be a love of lust look in her eyes and she gave him some might sloppy kisses during that one scene. I always though Capt Kirk hooked up with her, but maybe I'm getting that confused with Shatner and her in real life???
Just a bit of original Star Trek history relating to the new movie regarding the love life of the Enterprise crew. In the original series. They stated that Nurse Chapel, played by Mrs. Gene Rodenberry Majel Barrett, was always romantically attracted to Spock but Spock couldn't return her affection because of his Vulcan reserve. There was an episode where they find a utopian world with plants that give complete mental health and happiness. There Spock meets an old friend who he also was attracted to but couldn't return her affection until the plants cause Spock to be able to express his emotions. I don't recall Uhura having a specific flame but there is a famous episode where aliens force Kirk and Uhura to kiss for their amusement. This was the first inter-racial kiss shown on network TV. Otherwise even though Kirk hooked up with as many green skinned and / or artificially created women as he could he respected the Starfleet policy of fraternizing with subordinates and kept his hands off of the Enterprise crew.
J.J. Abrams must have his set designers spend a lot of time at the Apple Store. I thought the movie was entertaining, the acting was good (the actors seemed to inhabit the characters without doing an impression of the original actors, which is good). There was a good amount of humor mixed in with the action and whatnot, which I enjoyed. But the ending seemed unearned and too easy.
I agree that it would have been cool to have actually seen Archer. Then we could have seen the first three historical cpts of the Enterprise; Archer, Pike and Kirk.
Saw it this morning and thought it was pretty good. I didn't leave the theatre blown away, but I'd give it a solid 8.5 out of 10.
I missed the mention of Archer, but wouldn't he be well over a 100 years old by the time Kirk was even born?
People live longer in the future. And, presumably, so do their dogs (unless we're too assume it was a different beagle than the one on Enterprise).
Thought it was good overall. But even though they tried really hard to not be corny like the other trek movies, it still was in some places... especially some of the dialogue - was just weird sometimes. But, I'll definitely watch the sequel, which I guess was their intent all along.. same strategy as the batman series.. batman begins gets the audience interested again, and the dark knight is the big payoff.
Was never a fan of Star Trek...thought Id give the movie a shot. I think it was only decent. I really dont see how it was amazing. By the end of it, I was just wanting to go home. Zoe Saldana was fun to look at. Also, the movie has slightly peaked my interest to see what the Star Treks of the past were all about. I dont know, I think if I had followed the series beforehand, this movie would have been more enjoyable. I'll give it a 7/10 and that's me being nice.
Had alot of great inside humor to those who followed the old series. Didnt mention the Klingons much, thought they kind of left it open for the next movie, I see them having a bigger role.
I saw it tonight, pretty freaking good... I don't want to jump out there and watch any of the older movies, and I likely won't, but I am anticipating the sequel.
I thought the movie was good, nothing great. The plot could have been much better, previous posts have already mentioned what was lacking. I was into the next generation as a kid, prefer Picard to Kirk.
I thought it was pretty good. Chris Pine did an excellent job in setting up Kirk's character. Next to him, Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy was an absolute riot. He paid tribute to the original McCoy without copying him.
I thought the movie was great. Reading some of the complaints, I do see what you all are saying, but don't feel nearly as strongly in those areas (i.e. - the Apple Store look of the ship - I didn't think Apple store until I read this thread, thought it was fine), so really really liked it.
The Apple Store look of the ship didn't bother me. It's just something that I've noticed in J.J. Abrams' previous work, as well (like on later seasons of Alias).
