And I mean a fan of a different team by the way. Rockets fans are all credible and respectful in my book.
1 - Born and raised. 2 - Pretty much since birth but my earliest memory is of the Lakers losing to the Celtics in the '84 Finals and me crying about it. My dad is a hardcore Laker fan so I pretty much have purple and gold running through my veins. 3 - Magic 4 - Tie between http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCXDm3Bt21Y and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKBm2kevXQk 5 - Magic announcing that he had HIV. Shed a few tears that day too.
Not that I doubt your passion for the Rockets, but I just can't see myself to be truly committed to another team in another city unless I spent a significant amount of time there to "be part of it". Sure, I *like* the Cavs and Blazers and Heat, but as soon as their superstars leave/retire and their teams return to non-relevance, I can see myself not not giving a damn about those teams. In this case, I would be a bandwagoner. As for being a Rockets fan myself, I didn't really become a true fan until I moved to Houston in '99 (not a great time to be a Rockets fan, might I add). I missed the championship years, but I do remember Stockton's dagger 3 in Game 6 (but it didn't affect me nearly as much as the Finley out-of-bounds steal on Barry). I can see myself cheering for the Rockets whether we win 60 or 16 games, and I think that separates fans from bandwagoners. Just my 2c!
so you think that other fans in other cities cant do the same? i root for the team with or without stars, 60 or 6 wins and i have been since 1988 even though the i've probably only spent a total of 10 days in houston. while the majority of fans in other cities tend to be bandwagoners it doesnt mean they all are and you should label them all as such
I doubt they will identify themselves, its true though the Lakers bandwagon(or often Kobe) fans are probably the worst and most uninformed fans in the league. However true Lakers fans I have found normally show class and are quite informed. When you have players like Kobe, Lebron, Wade and even T-Mac you get the annoying kid player fans who just end up giving all fans of a team a bad name.
1. I live in LA. 2. I hate the Lakers 3. Magic Johnson 4. When Payton, Kobe, Malone, and Shaq got their asses handed to them by the Pistons in five games. 5. Lakers 3-peat.
I completely agree. I will admit that I have never lived in Houston---I was a Yao fan at first. However, after I joined this board and learned more about the Rockets team, history, and challenges it had faced. Now, I identify with the team and its fan-base. I cheer for the Rockets regardless of their winning record, and I cheer for the rockets regardless of its roster.
1- nope live a little up north from sacramento forever 2- uhh i was like maybe 6? so like 13 years ago..my dads a laker fan so i was kinda destined to lol 3- kobe 4- all the sacramento playoffs were pretty great seems how all my friends are kings fans haha, those 3peat days were sick..kobes 81 point game, kobes 2 buzzer beaters against portland in the last game of the year to clinch the 1st seed over the kings was straight up ridiculous..theres to many good memories 5- the whole kobe-shaq breakup sucked, losing to detroit in finals in 04 and last years finals sucked..starting kwame, luke, smush for 2 years haha but yeah im a huge fan of the lakers and dont live in LA..but i have been there a few times but that doesnt even matter..im also a KC chiefs fan..theres no way in hell anyone would jump on that teams bandwagon right? haha so yeah it doesnt even matter where u live
I agree. Gives a chance to help make a bandwagon fan into a truer fan by being polite and accentuating the positives, showing the enjoyment of following the team. It still takes a little fan-to-fan interaction to generate appeal. Plus some drunken celebratory hugs to woman bandwagon fan when you're team does something awesome is definitely merry Its more the awkwardness of a bandwagon fan trying to talk like they know stuff when they obviously dont know anything about the team. Or when the casual fan latches on to the obvious most prestigious teams like the Yankees and USC so they can align themselves with greatness.
I'm not a Laker fan, but I'm one of the few NBA fans on this board. The Rockets are my team because I grew up in Houston, but I watch all NBA games, not just the rockets. I love watching the NBA, I follow all the teams and all the players and I like watching the most talented basketball players in the world play basketball, therefore, I enjoy watching Kobe play to be honest with you.
And who cares about "true fanhood"? What does that even mean? The point of sports is to get entertainment. If it entertains them, why on earth would you care?
Obviously its easy to be entertained when your team is winning. It's a lot harder to stick with a team through thick and thin...loyalty used to actually exist in sports, particularly in basketball, but that has disappeared in every aspect of the sport. Being a fan is no longer synonomous or associated with loyalty. This whole bandwagon fan thing is really a microcosm of our society. We get behind the people that are rich, famous, have power, and are on top. Why would people care about others when they're down? It's true even with Rockets fans before game 4. People said they couldn't win and now they're ready to hop back on....pathetic.
No, I don't think so at all. If you're behind a team through the good times and bad then I wouldn't say that is a bandwagon fan...doesn't matter the city you're from or the one you live in.
Huh? If you follow a team through its' up and downs, you're not a bandwagon fan if that's the only team you follow and cheer for. What if you're from a city without a sports team, are all Galveston Rockets fans bandwagon fans?
Checking in. I'm a Laker fan and have been for only 6 years or so. I root for the Lakes. Now that doesn't mean that I'm not a Rockets fan. I'm a fan of both teams.
