Seems that Obama plans to, in the name of savings, shut down Yucca.

This. Is. Nuts. Want to complain about government waste? Yucca has been a financial sinkhole for ALMOST 40 YEARS. And now we're going to shut it down before it ever is used. And REEVALUATE. (that means: do it all over again)

Yucca is known in geological circles as "the most studied rock on the planet".

The best part? Everyone is clamoring for more nuclear power plants! The industry has been paying a "nuclear containment tax" as part of the Yucca program and they will pay an even larger amount of tax (if more plants are actually built) only to continue to store nuclear waste in small storage pools scattered all over the country.

Unbelievable. I presume we can thank Harry Reid as well. Idiots.

The more I find out about Obama, the less I think he has a clue

This is dumb we need a storage facility and Yucca Mountain fits the bill.

Big Sandy, Tx comes to mind, it's desolate of any degree of culture, sanity and basic human intelligence. The perfect place to dump a heaping load of highly radioactive material.

Is there a difference between shutting it down and mothballing the idea?

It's important to note that this is only proposed. As for your question, I don't think there is a differance.

Terrible decision, and it stinks of Harry.

I am incredibly pro-nuclear. Even nuculer. Yucca could really have worked, and maybe it still can. Letters to my reps and senators on their way...

He is also cutting nuclear power subsidies. I guess Obama wants to rely on unproven solar power and intermittent wind rather than proven nuclear technology.

    — Nuclear Power 2010 — subsidies to an industry program aimed at helping utilities overcome regulatory uncertainties associated with reactor licensing. Uncle Sam was expecting to go in 50:50 to a tune of $500 million. More recent estimates suggest the federal share could exceed $700 million. Since the program has already spurred significant interest in developing new power plants — 26 to date — the federal government wants to end further subsidies. It would spend $20 million this year to phase out the program. FY 2010 savings, based on previously planned spending: $158 million.

Kill 2 birds 1 stone.... bring all the troops home and send the nuclear waste to Alfganistan-Pakistan border :D

just kidding, it was supposed to be funny????

really, are we so dumbed down to think upside down?

the proposed Obama budget is about 3.5 trillion $$$$
the last Bush budget was $2.9 trillion $$$$
Obama only has 160 billion in the budget for the 2 wars, which we know how that will go when they spend it all...
And the next round of bailouts are not included.

Killing 19 billion $$$ in spending programs is not honestly a cut, just a budget transfer.

Cutting requires at least spending less than 2.9 trillion- and that isn't going to happen.

past point of no return... give up the debate

wave the white flag... we are going in debt places man has never been before.

It's really surprising considering how serious Obama SEEMS to be on the issue global warming. I mean he totally agrees with Al Gore on how serious the threat of climate change to the planet is.

He said in the campaign that it should be "explored" as an energy option. I guess the exploring phase is over. I guess his his administration didn't figure out that: nuclear power produces virtually no air pollution. It doesn't rely on foreign sources of energy. It's safety record is excellent. Even France loves nuclear.

Come on Obama, if you really thought global warming was killing the planet, you wouldn't be killing nuclear.

One of the solutions is setup a PUREX plant in the US somewhere.

Very expensive. But of course, building new plants would dwarf that cost, so... *shrugs*

I do NOT approve. Yuca is delicious and should be promoted. I am going to write a letter, too, B-Bob, and tell my reps "Yuca on the shelf, not to be shelved!" over and over. Bumper stickers. T-shirts. They will feel the hurt.

    Don't write a letter to that notorious jack-head B-Bob.

He will likely wad it up and use it to line his cage, the buffoon.

He won't even mate anymore, much less read a well-penned piece of correspondence.

He is the least interesting man in the world. Like in the Dos Equis commercials. Just the opposite of that guy.

I see the top side of an underground nuclear storage facility.
    ___

Seriously what is the worst thing that could happen to this facility -- is there really a chance groundwater could be contaminated ? (No)
