Kobe is the exact reason I admire Lebron so much more. More class, humility, etc. If we can't get it I'll pulling for King James.

    Now i wouldn't exagerate.

Wilt and Big O are also considered the best ever.

well i guess i did take it 2 far. I just don't like the way the media brags about Kobe. Yeah he is one hell of a player but remember he ALWAYS had a good team. Like the man said " Kobe can't do without me!!!!! " and its been proven ever since he left.

The only guy I could have mentioned in the same sentence with MJ was Grant Hill. It sucks that he had that injury to his ankle and always kept rushing back to get on the court. IF ( theres that famous word used her on clutchfans :D ) Grant Hill never hurt himself he would have been the guy Jordan passed the torch to instead of Kobe

You have to be kidding me... nobody talked more on the court than MJ. The only people I think that came close to his trash talking were Bird and Gary Payton.

Are you serious? Lebron is probably the most arrogant player in the league. Moreso than Kobe. Just about everything he does is an attempt to be in the spotlight.

Hardly, he's one hell of a lot more humble.

Kobe shouldn't be in the same breath as MJ. Oscar Robertson and Wilt should though.

Grant Hill is practically the same as Tmac except he has more determination and a tad bit less talent.

    To Wekko:

Lebron has fun, he never taunts competitors. When LBJ shot like 20 3 pointers in Richard Jeffersons grill not once did he even stare at him or talk to trash.

Having fun and taunting are two completely different things.

    KOBE is a child,not a leader.
    MJ is a leader!
This is the difference between them.

Shane is such a classy guy both on and off the court. Shane defends legitimately and righteously. Shane never claimed he was Kobe Stopper or anything. He showed tremendous respect for that sick man. He did not whine towards ref or blamed Kobe after being elbowed in Game 1.

I felt disgusting when I saw Kobe intentionally speaking toward camera during Game 2" You can not stop/gurard me" blur blur. Act adult, Kobe, stupid NBA ass of all time.

MJ and Joe Dumars had legendary face offs. Dumars was considered probably the best perimeter defender during the Bad Boy era. MJ never showed him up ,the way Kobe showed up Shane, if he ever got the best of him. There may be some idle trash talk but never the act the Kobe has been known for.

Thats the difference. Kobe always thinks its just about him.

Larry Bird was a HUGE trash talker.

I also grew up watching MJ's games, as an earlier poster said. MJ talked ENORMOUS amounts of trash. I can recall him dogging Clyde in a game when the Bulls played the Clyde-Dream-Barkley Rockets, I think. Clyde was ticked off, big time.

It's a shame that Seattle and their zone defense kept Houston from playing the Bulls in the Finals. That would have been outstanding.

Anyways, one major difference between Kobe and MJ (among many) is that MJ was much, much tougher (physically and mentally) than is Kobe. Especially physically.

The reason MJ started lifting weights during his career was because of Detroit's Jordan Rules and such. MJ took a pounding, particularly against Detroit and Van Gundy's/Riley's Knicks. Guys like Mahorn, Rodman, Anthony Mason, Xavier McDaniel, etc. -- really tough, bruising guys who would knock you down hard and were allowed to within the rules (league was more physical then and suspensions harder to come by), at least as they were enforced.

MJ was stronger and bigger than Kobe, especially in the upper body. If Kobe had to deal with teams like the Bad Boy Pistons and the Riley Knicks, he might already be out of the league. I can imagine someone like Xavier McDaniel just mentally and physically destroying Kobe.

Much nastier group back then and they got away with a lot more.

Another thing that's a big difference between MJ and Kobe -- the handcheck and defensive rules. If MJ played with today's rules, he could have seriously made a run at 100 points in a game. Back then, you could handcheck and control guys more with your body on defense than you can now. Kobe never could have dreamed of scoring 81 points back then, even against the Raptors (if they existed). MJ averaged 37 with those rules. If he played today, and wanted to, he could average 40 for a season.

Two other differences: MJ was more explosive a jumper than Kobe, and he had larger hands (which made his palming the ball -- very effective for fakes and when in the air for layups/dunks -- much easier than for Kobe).

Kobe isn't close to MJ, which is no crime. No one else is, either. LeBron has a chance, especially if he wins a ring this year. But it's going to take a lot of work to get from here to there.

I really think your over looking Oscar Robertson.

Great post and i have to agree with everything except the bolded sentence. My family had tapes of Wilt and Oscar Robertson. I don't think they were overall better than Jordan but the big O must've been the most complete player I have ever seen. He did EVERYTHING at a high level. It was truly amazing. Wilt dominated his era EASILY, it was no competition AT ALL. Not because everyone else sucked, but because his skills were so advanced at the period of time that he was undoubtedly the best athlete of that decade. These two basket ball players had IQ's like no other i have ever seen. They knew what was coming before it was there.

Thanks, friend -- and you're right: The Big O was exceptional, and should be mentioned. Thanks for pointing that out. :)

Other guys were on the level of MJ, at least somewhat, but they weren't wingmen. I'm thinking of Wilt, of course. He was just a freak of nature and, as you said, was way ahead of his time. If he came into today's NBA he would dominate again.

    Great post.

Kobe is an MJ-wannabe. You ever notice he started to stick his tongue out while driving to the basket?? I have never seen that from him..it's just recently. Funny he try to be like MJ....but MJ is more classy and much tougher.
