So much of JVG's defensive strategy is tied to his overall game plan. It wouldn't be easy to tell him to only coach the defense. Part of the reason our transition defense (and overall defense) under JVG was so good is that we never crashed the offensive boards and always dropped guys back into defense after a missed shot. We also always controlled the clock and never pushed the ball like we do with Brooks/Lowry now.
Everything you said was spot on but I'd like to point out that those strategies were dictated, at least in part, by the personnel. We didn't have anyone who could push the ball or get an offensive rebound. Remember when Yao couldn't secure a contested rebound to save his life? I know that JVG is a smart guy and I think he might be able to adjust the way he did things.
there's a lot of making fun of Van Gundy....but it speaks enormously for the character of the man that he never let his perception of how that went down to spoil his relationship with players...or to keep him from being gracious to the franchise. not everyone is enough man to do that.
I'm not trying to make fun of JVG - I actually like him for being a homer. No one else has confidence in our ability outside of people in Houston, with exception a few people from ESPN.
Good prediction. He's the only analyst that knows the current rockets inside and out, better than anyone.
Lol damn what a homer. Anyways, I hope his Rocket predictions are right. As Hubie Brown said though, Rockets will have to play a perfect series to take out the Lakers.
After witnessing the way Yao played and carried himself, why wouldn't an ex-Coach of Yaos root for him, homer or not.
The doubt is against Houston. Therefore, to go against the status quo, you have to have some shred of homerism. To be a homer, you must not be a Shemac. To be a Shemac is to not give Houston any shred of hope. JVG tells it how it is. And that my friend, is to be a homer. Therefore, since we all know that being a Shemac < Homer, I applaud JVG. I agree with that 100%. For example, Barkley never gave Houston credit on TNT, until he got older and forgot the 1997 turmoil. He is somewhat objective now. It says something about your character and humility as a person.
Man how awesome would it be if we could hire JVG as like a defensive coach. Kinda like in football, have our own defensive coordinator. Would be awesome. Too bad it wont happen
I really don't know what to say about JVG. Dude drove me nuts at times, but he clearly has great affection for this franchise. He really has a connection with Yao, Shane, Chuck, etc. He has been the definition of class and he refuses to trash us and continually stands up for us against all the other dummies. Props to him !!
