So what? Every one in Blazer will tell you they lost the serial because we have Scola, a man who scored 17 ppts per game. Did you see they even change the whole defense system to stop him?
I think I'm doing the opposite of what you're saying. I'm not averaging all six games but giving you the average of the other five games to point out Scola's poor free-throw night in Game 2 was an anamoly. Aside from Game 2, he went 3/4, 1/1, 1/2, 3/3, and 5/6. Granted, you could argue he shot too few free throws, but you can't argue that he missed a lot throughout the series. And like most people, through the first five games of our Portland series, I looked at our Game 1 blowout win as an anamoly. So I agree just averaging out the point-differential of those five games would not have given an accurate picture. I think it's a trap to give too much credence to a single win or loss when looking at individual stats. Whether we won Game 3 by a few points or lost by the same points, Yao's low percentage, and the reasons for it, remains the same. It is more important whether the number and kind of shots he took were the ones he and Adelman wanted him to take.
The day I see Scola getting consistent double teams and collapsing defense, is the day I will consider voting him the MVP. I love the guy. But he's the player the Blazers chose to leave open to help out on Yao and penetration. The fact that he came through doesn't mean he's more valuable. But it does show why people on this board have been clamoring for a shooting PF during the days of Kato/JH/Hayes.
Well, they will tell you that when they doubled Yao, they left Scola open from the outside because they first wanted to take away our offensive options in Yao, Artest and Brooks. They will probably say they didn't expect Scola's outside jumper to remain consistent for an entire series. And they will also say that they were wrong.
ESCOOOOLLLLLLAAAAAAA!!!!! Although yao is the focal point of the team. when yao was ineffective, scola came in and did a very nice job of providing some of offense and "heffert" as Bull says.
Why there isn't the most important person, one of the top five player of the whole NBA league. If so, I chose Yao. Von Wafer and Shane Battier were the MVP, too. Cant choose three players?
Im not a big Yao fan, but i still vote for Yao. Obviously he played like a true leader! Huge effect on both defence and offence. Scola was excelent on offence, but he didnt do a good job on defending Aldridge.
Funny logic. Lebron James plays like always, Mo Williams is the difference this year. So who is the MVP on Cavs?
lebron's PER this year was the best of his career. he got his and more, and he also got mo williams his. again, the poll really tells you more of a team effort. everybody had different roles and they fulfilled them well. nobody had to carry much more than the other. yao - draw the double, play D, rebound scola - make them pay for doubling yao, D up aldridge ron - shut down roy battier - make big shots and was our best team defender wafer and lowry - game-changers that's a beautiful thing.
It doesn't matter Lebron's per, obviously Mo Williams makes them a better team this year. He is the biggest difference between this year and last year's team. What I want to say is that guy's logic is flawed. A guy makes difference doesn't mean he's the most valuable player, unless you take the true most valuable guy for granted.
yes his logic is very flawed and i understand what you are saying. yao was obviously a huge player for us drawing doubles and playing defense. but obviously most, esp. me, expected yao to take his game to the superstar level or at least near it. but he played well. it doesn't really matter who the team MVP is as long as we win.
I have no idea whether to choose Yao or Scola. They are both the best. But if I must choose one of them, I perfer Yao. It's 7 Years, that's a so long time. He deserves this title.
All Scola for me. The guy was hitting EVERY single open shot given to him. He even created for himself and scored consistently. The problem with Yao is he got figured out and started backing down a bit in a couple of games, although he picked his game back up soon after. Scola however, never failed to show up. He also made a few clutch shots which we really needed. When Yao was on the bench, Scola was probably our primary or secondary scorer. Not to mention, he and Aldridge were fun to watch. They were both battling each other on both ends, and noone really had an advantage over the other (besides game 1 where Scola was beastly).
"Scola was hitting EVERY single open shot given to him". Yet Yao and Scola vertually had the same FG% in the series, with Yao leading FT% by a huge margin. "Scola even creates for himself“, that's true. But Yao creates for others as well as for himself. In fact, he created tons of open look for Scola, and Scola make Blazers pay. Yao's two worst games stats wise is 11/7 and 7/13 with 2 guys on him all day long, but he "failed to show up" despite playing best defense in his career. Scola had 9/4 and 12/5 games with single or half coverage on him, yet he "never failed to show up." Again, it just shows how much Yao has been taken for granted.
