There is a problem though about what it means to be "White" as even there you are talking about a hodge podge of cultures. I think you also have to separate technological development vs culture. No doubt everyone has been affected by technology developed by whites (as in people descended from Northern European regions) but whites have also been affected by technology of others, such as gun powder. Also to distinguish white culture from other racial cultures African culture has profoundly affected white culture along with Hispanic and Asian cultures.
The war was about slavery first and foremost. Those fighting for the South were fighting on the side that would preserve and even extend the peculiar institution.
It was geared more towards those people in America who legitimize their hate for others by labeling the celebration of "white culture." Of course there are differences among the Caucasian races, however they are very similar in that collectively they have shaped the world that we live in today.
Not at all, the contributions of "white culture" including Capitalism and democracy are some of the greatest achievements of the human race.
The entire backdrop of the war was composed of increasingly hostile disputes over slavery. Sure, there was no outright emancipation before the war, but the addition of free states to the union as well as conflicts over fugitive slave laws clearly pointed in that direction. The country simply could not remain divided over such an inflamitory issue for much longer. States' rights was only important insofar as it allowed southern states to preserve slavery going forward.
I agree they were fighting for the wrong side, and slavery was the most important issue, and legacy of the war. But to claim that they were all fighting to preserve slavery when some of them were against slavery, doesn't make sense. I'm not sure that the war was first and foremost about slavery. It is arguable. I think that probably was the issue that brought all the other issues to the forefront. But there were other issues as well. Either way there is no doubt that slavery was the most important issue looking back at our history.
I'm gonna start a blog. Gonna name it "THE MELTING POT". The base theme of the project will be to voluntarily assimilate all races into one single race called "Earthlings". It'll take about 5 or 6 generations but in the end, everyone on earth should genetically have no more than 20% of [insert race/culture here] in them. Then racism should cease to exist right? Who's with me!?
Sounds like a Perfect Race! Those who refuse to join the program can be sterilized or simply disposed of! Perhaps this is the Final Solution to all our problems!
It definitely was a different time back then. State rights were often put ahead of what was a much looser and smaller Federal Government. Lee was a great miltary leader, and the Union wanted him badly, but he was loyal to his State. Lets also not pretend that everyone in the Union was anti-slavery, or that the majority even began to consider blacks as equal. Slavery is a sad portion of everyone's culture, our founding fathers included.
Slavery was an important reason that the South left for the Civil War, but overwhelmingly, the North fought for the ability to keep the tax revenue that they were taking from Southern farmers and propping up industrial corporations. Lincoln desparately needed popular support for the war to keep from losing the Northeast, and gave the Emancipation Proclamation, which had no real effect until Southern States were brought back into the Union. It was drawn extremely narrowly to avoid offending any "approved slaveholder". Slavery remained legal in several Northern States and in and around New Orleans (under Union control) until the 13th Amendment was ratified months after the War was over. The then-new Republican Party was a nationalist-corporatist party first, and an anti-slavery party second.
Thank God someone has finally taken up the science of documenting White Culture: http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.com/
I will do my part and impregnate all of the white, black and indian girls you need me to. No Eskimos though, those losers can go **** themselves!
"My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union. I shall do less whenever I shall believe what I am doing hurts the cause, and I shall do more whenever I shall believe doing more will help the cause." The Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln edited by Roy P. Basler, Volume V, "Letter to Horace Greeley" (August 22, 1862), p. 388. While certainly slavery was the main particular regarding to states rights the cause for the war and why it was fougth was more than just over slavery.
