I just saw Girl Talk a few weeks ago at Coachella. Trust me guys, skip that set. It's lame. There are several good acts I'm looking forward to though: Ghostland Observatory! Phoenix Pearl Jam Beastie Boys The Decemberists Passion Pit Bon Iver Lily Allen Mos Def Grizzly Bear Airborne Toxic Event I don't think it's as good as the Lolla lineup, but it's good.
dm = excellent song writer... whether you enjoy his music or not the guy can pen some damn good lyrics. clapton = guitar god. someone should punch you in the stomach.
Easy there - DMB is good stuff. The problem is (1) having the biggest collection of douchebag fanboys and idiot girl fanbases any artist has ever generated and (2) dropping 3 very unfortunate (for different reasons*) albums in a row. This tour and last year's have been prime stuff. The addition of Tim Reynolds and Jeff Coffin alone makes them very much must-see material if you haven't caught them live in a few years. I just don't know if I could handle 50+ thousand fanboys and idiot girls in an GA festival setting. Especially for a truncated (80-90 min) set. Evan *Everyday - Dave's solo pop album, where the rest of the members became studio session musicians *Busted Stuff - a very half-hearted re-rehashing of the leaked LWS and a couple new songs *Stand Up - the laziest effort possible both in writing and production. A piss on the fans moment.
fair enough, and were this not the case i might not hate DMB, but i don't think there is any way i would ever think it "good stuff." still waiting for the great lyrics though. this should be fun.
replying to you here would be like replying to some certain posters in the d&d...not worth my time. it must be weird to base one's feeling about music on who else likes it rather than the music itself. it's sad that people care that much about what other people think. emjohn, i don't think fanboys is the correct term. douchebag fratboys who are just there to be there is the more appropriate term. of course, most people i meet on the lawns have been great and it's a much more diverse cross-section than expected, especially age-wise. and to me, the presence of those people don't take away from the music being generated on the stage anyway.
sorry you feel that way. i am more than willing to have a serious dialogue regarding his merits. it's just sooooo ez to get you guys riled. seriously, post his best lyrics, i'll give'm an honest chance.
The fratboys are bad, but they actually don't annoy me as much as the fanboys. I was at a show in NYC, saw them do a new twist that I thought was cool, and two fanboys overheard me mentioning it on the way out and were literally scoffing since they had already done the same thing the last couple of weeks. I was apparently a tool for not listening to the pulls ahead of time. The sense of entitlement in that fanbase has also gotten completely out of control. Temper tantrums if a song is played 3 nights in a row, or if Blue Water doesn't make an appearance in the show they're at. I've seriously never seen a fanbase become as douchey as DMB's has become over the past 10 years. Their Charlottesville shows are like a damn Trekkie convention. Lyrics: I don't personally think that the lyrics themselves are end-all or Dylan/Lennon-esque (though clearly they were big influences, especially Lennon), more that the song topics are off the cliched path and occasionally have a neat perspective on things. Examples: Warehouse (on the melancholy acceptance of change in life), Cry Freedom (on the South African Apartheid), The Stone (debated - generally thought to be about Judas' guilt), Spoon (wrestling with life and meaning), and DDTW (on the shoving out of Indians) For pure lyrics, I'd suggest googling for I'll Back You Up (missing an ex)
Who's worse? DMB fanboys or Phish fans? I have to go with Phish being the worst. At least DMB fans have some semblance of personal hygiene.
hmmm, just 'cause he's been mentioned multiple times in this thread, compare your suggested lyrics with bon iver's skinny love: Come on skinny love just last the year Pour a little salt we were never here My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my Staring at the sink of blood and crushed veneer I tell my love to wreck it all Cut out all the ropes and let me fall My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my Right in the moment this order's tall I told you to be patient I told you to be fine I told you to be balanced I told you to be kind In the morning I'll be with you But it will be a different "kind" I'll be holding all the tickets And you'll be owning all the fines Come on skinny love what happened here Suckle on the hope in lite brassiere My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my Sullen load is full; so slow on the split I told you to be patient I told you to be fine I told you to be balanced I told you to be kind Now all your love is wasted? Then who the hell was I? Now I'm breaking at the britches And at the end of all your lines Who will love you? Who will fight? Who will fall far behind?
Great line up.. but I'm always so hesitant to go to ACL cause of the experience factor: picking up the ticket, finding a place to park, heat, and dust.
emjohn, spot on. my bad about that...you're absolutely right. i guess i've just been very lucky to not be next to them at the shows, but that is why i never visit any of the clutchfans-esque bbses dedicated to them. thegary, i enjoy pig and you never know. both about the uncertainty of life and living each day to the fullest. i'm a sucker for that kind of stuff though.
emjohn, I'm glad you mentioned the DMB fans. I've been to 3 shows and the lawn always seems to be Douchebag Central. Like you and Googlerule ...googdux ...Googoorux... ah hell, what RM95 said, lots of idiot frat boys and sorority bimbos just there for the "scene" whatever that is. Also agree that a lot of their fans are snobby about their fandom. (I'm probably a little guilty of that when it comes to The Police, but whatever... ) As a rule, I usually don't like "jam bands". Unless it's traditional jazz (or SRV...), 20 minute solos just don't do anything for me - and I'm a musician. I just think it gets boring after a few minutes and frankly it's almost lazy musicianship. Just my flea bitten opinion though. I think what sets DMB apart is Carter Freakin' Beauford. The guy is just a SICK drummer. I could listen to him play 24 hours a day and never get tired of it. He drives the whole band and they just wouldn't be the same without him. They play more "in the pocket" than any other 'jam band' I've ever heard. And it's mostly because of Carter and the bass player. Still jealous that RM95 got to meet him.
Come and see I swear by now I'm playing time Against my troubles I'm coming slow but speeding Do you wish A dance, and while I'm in the front The play on time is won Oh, but the difficulty's coming here I will go in this way And find my own way out I wont tell you what to be But I'm coming to much more Me All at once the ghosts come back Reeling in you now What if they came down crushing Remember when I used to play for All of the loneliness that nobody Notices now I'm begging slow I'm coming here I'll be waiting I wanted to stay I wanted to play I wanted to love you I'm only this far And only tomorrow leads the way I'm coming waltzing back and moving into your head Please I wouldn't pass this by Oh, no I wouldn't take any more than What sort of man goes by I will bring water Why won't you ever be glad It melts into wonder I came in praying for you Why wont you run Into the rain and play Let it just splash all over you
I'm going after missing last year. DMB Kings of Leon John Legend Ghostland Observatory Toadies Decemberists Coheed and Cambria Arctic Monkeys Lily Allen Andrew Bird Phoenix Bon Iver Grizzly Bear Devotchka Blitzen Trapper etc, etc, etc
