93 octane gas is $1.99 p/g in Chicago. What's it in Houston?

Man o man are we getting gouged.

I only buy gas in the city when I've been driving with the little orange light on for two days or more (my empty tank gauge must come on with 4 or 5 gallons still in the tank) and I can't make it to Indiana anytime soon. And then it's only a gallon or two.

My car---a lexus ES300---needs 93 octane according to the dealership and the user manual.

But in cases where I have to buy in the city I buy the mid-grade and hardly ever see any degradation in performance. Is this a problem? I'm wary of going to that grade fulltime.

The governer is suposedly almighty ticked off at border-jumpers like me giving away tax money to other states---but the prices are outrageous. I get gas for 30 cents a gallon less in Indiana---and the price shrinks the furthur into the state I drive! Sometimes going two extra blocks will save you 15 cents. And I was in Missouri last weekend and gas was only $1.39.

Frustrating...but I love this city. Only other place I've been I'd want to live is Tokyo...

Premium 93 octane is $1.28 at the Exxon and the HEB grocery by my office here in Austin. (Parmer and I-35). It's $1.47 by my apt. on Oltorf.

I live in Texarkana, TX and its between $1.45 and $1.50 at most places. In my old Cavalier I used to just get regular unleaded, but I try to put at least 89 octane now that I have a Camaro. I don't really think there is that much of a difference between each octane, but when my dad drove an Acura, he said he could notice a difference in performance when he got anything less than 91 octane.

My main question is since you drive such a nice car why does the price of gas per gallon matter that much?

Here in Tallahassee, FL, it's $1.41/$1.51/$1.61 for 87/89/93 octane respectively, and that's at it's cheapest. Down in Orlando, it's slightly cheaper, albeit not by much. A good deal cheaper just north of the border here in Georgia, though.

You may hear knocking (improper combustion of the fuel) if you use a fuel lower in octane than you should have. If your car has an knock sensor, you'll eventually notice lower performance and acceleration. Eventually knocking can end up damaging the engine.

    Welcome to my hell

many of you know that I live in the hamptons area of NY. well specifically on an Island. first off the hamptons arnt cheap. second, having the gas trucks pay $50 to come acrossa the ferry somehow gives the stations the excuse they need to out charge the hamptons by an additional $0.15

unfortunately during the winters pleasently low prices, nationwide my gas NEVER got below $1.79:99 so while many places nationwide were paying under a buck a gallon i was still paying almost two. and yes the prices have crept up again and with the big weekend passing Im sure we have many more increces to come.

I am looking forward to 2.25 by july 4th

ohh, and I always buy regular. the premium only gets me about 2 more miles per gallon

Stop by downtown or the south side of the city. Yup...I know gas is cheaper in the 'burbs. My brother works in Naperville and pays less than I...

But the burbs have no personality. :p

In Dallas, I have found 93 Octane to be anywhere from $1.45 - $1.55. My truck requires it as well.

Of course, with a 25+ gallon tank, it costs about 35 bones to fill up. YIKES!

Can't beat $1.28 for premium at the HEB on Parmer and I-35. $1.30 at Exxon.

I'm always amazed that people pay attention to how much a gallon of gas costs. I never look.

DOD is right about lower octane gas. I have an ES300 also and I always use 93 octane. What's the out of pocket difference per fillup, two bucks?

I never really look at the price, either and always dump in whatever the owners manual recommends. I try to hold onto my car for several years and/or put at least 130-150k miles before buying a new one. I'd rather pay the costs of a few extra tankfuls of gas than have to worry about engine problems and having to constantly repair the car or get a new engine.

Oh, and I believe Exxon Plus is around $1.47 where I live (Dallas area) and Exxon Supreme is around $1.57 or so. I can find them about a nickel to a dime cheaper a few blocks over.

We use the same Exxon! :) Though I haven't been doing the premium thing... it's $1.19 regular right now... who knows, maybe the HEB gas is OK but I'm scared to put just any brand of gas into my car. Maybe premium does give better gas mileage... should try it once and see... of course, I'm in a truck and the mileage is horrible.

My brother-in-law spent a year in Illinois and tells similar wild stories about gas prices, including the Indiana border-jumpers and the fact that the prices fluctuate. For example, the price at the Exxon has been the same for the past several days and only goes up or down by a couple cents at a time. Even then, it's the same that whole day and probably the next. In Illinois, I hear they just go up and down quickly and randomly, even in the same day. For example, they see a low gas price, decide to fill up on the way back from the errand they're running, and by the time they go back around to the gas station it's expensive again.

Ditto. The HEB when it first opened had really cheap gas to get people use to coming to that store. It went up during lunch to normal prices....while my friend was buying groceries. He was still upset 7 hours later.
