This is an interesting story. It could be quite important if the Chinese are moving in this direction. I would be thrilled. Maybe they can join Nato also.

Internationally a social democratic China would be a good counterweight to the type of Republicans who want to make the world free from social security, medicare, other national health schemes and public education. The public library system still appears to be somewhat supported in their current world view.

OK, well when you meet one, please have him/her call me. I thought I was the only Republican who felt this way. My main goal in life is to rob senior citizens, the poor, and ESPECIALLY minorities of health care and welfare subsidies.

Also, you forgot to mention how much we hate clean air.

Bush has proposed to start privatising social security and turning it over to his contributors in the mutual fund industry.. He has been resisting giving a real drug benefit plan to medicare recipients. His tax breaks, with the bulk of the benefits to the upper classes have created a new and growing deficit, that draws from the public coffers, further weakening our ability to keep the system secure.. Vouchers for public schools weaken the universality of the public school system and decrease the support for public funding of the public schools as more children are subsidized to go to private schools. Increasing debt in Austin due to a desire to keep taxes low on the same classes leads to higher and higher costs at UT Austin.

Actually by fighting an increased CAFE standard mandating increased fuel economy for motor vehicles and such schemes as drilling in the Artic, going against the Global Warming Treaty etc. Bush has even been objectively in favor of increasing air pollution and lowering environmental standards. Thanks for reminding me. :)

It is good to see a response that isn't personal and over emotional.

I'm glad that we at least agree that a Chinese turn to democracy and freedom would be very desirable. If this was a public politcal forum in China one or both of us might very well be arrested or meaningfully punished in some fashion.

With a more democratic, free China then the real debate can begin. Virtually everyone except the dictators worldwide, whatever they call themselves, Party Chairman, Emir, El Presidente, whatever, believes in democracy in freedom. The real question is to what degree we have public services, progressive taxation and similar issues.
