why doesn't adelman call a pick and roll using yao and artest near the elbow? it was one of the most effect plays with bibby and webber back in the day. using the play would free artest to finish to the basket or dish to the open man or allow yao for an easy shot or dunk/layup.
<BR> I can't believe nobody else has thought of that yet! Oh wait -- they did. In about a dozen other threads.
Yao is probably the worst bigman roller (in PnR) in the game of basketball.... bad mobility and balance
To answer your question ... because Yao is as athletic as a tree stump. Having him roll or move a lot in any way is going against what he is good at. Do you really think Adelman hadn't tried this in practice? It doesn't work.
Are you really asking why a play that worked well with a PG and PF hasn't been tried with a SF and a center!?!?!
It might be because Ron is a terrible pick and roll player. He has one move on the P/R, if the opponent goes under the screen, he can shoot the jumper. That's it. Every other option usually ends in disaster. That being said, I'd like to see what Wafer could do in P/R situations with Yao. And I'd like Aaron to actually let Yao get set for a screen one of these days. He'd create a lot more space that way.
lowry and scola would be better combo, they actually did it very well in the last denver game. Scola is pretty good at catching the ball on the run and sweeping in to the rim..
JVG used this scheme very often during his reign. It works, and as you said, simple. And yeah, about a dozen other threads talk about this, and I personally posted this on another discussion 2 weeks ago. Adelman likes motion offense, less predictable, but need 3-4 players to be on the same page at the same time. PNR is more predictable, can be defended by a quick show and switch, but can work with only 2 players on the same page. In short, PNR works OK without much practice, while Adelman's offense will work great but only after 2-3 years of having the same players in the roster with lots of practice.
Have you not seen Artest when he is the ball handler in a Pick and Roll situation? He jacks up a jump shoot every time.
