ok, i'm not sure if you mistyped that, but are you saying shane didn't shoot last night when he was wide open because he didn't get the ball passed to him?

If that's what you mean then what's the point of this thread? How does Shane step up when he's not being passed the ball?

I didn't realize letting a player pop atleast 30+pts of his 42 on you is doing your job. I guess i was wrong tho.

Read what i wrote about shane and ron guarding roy, you cant stop the pick and roll defending one on one. Same thing with phoenix's pick and roll, nash's man can be the greatest defender in the world, but he's still not going to stop nash from creating by himself. It's a team thing.

When people voice their concern over shane's history of disappering in the playoffs, they're immediately called names or ridiculed. It makes it difficult to have a reasonable discussion based on the issues. This thread already has 1 star even though the OP has brought up a legitimate concern.

This is what people don't wanna hear and that is that battier is at most a 20 mpg bench player. He has very little offensive abilities. Most of the time he just stands around on the offensive end which is weird because he's supposed to have such a high bball iq. When he tries to dribble the basketball, its like he's going in slow motion. Any half-way decent nba defender can pick his pocket easily.

All his weaknesses are suppressed when the rockets win, but they're still there. How many games has battier won for the rockets? 1 maybe 2 the entire time he's been here in houston. All the other major role players on the team have been responsible for a few victories this season alone.

Last night, I was hoping adelman would take shane out and bring in von sooner, but by the time he did it was too late. Battier's mpg should be reduced and he and brooks should be benched in favor of wafer and lowry in the starting lineup next season if a 1st tier wing isn't brought in.

Battier's so-called intangibles don't outweigh his lack of tangible production. Many times he's a liability out there. The thought of having him and chuck hayes out there makes me cringe.

Having Battier in the game when Yao is being fronted hurts the Rockets a lot more because now we have 2 players who are absolutely giving us nothing on that end. When Yao is being played with his man behind the back, he has the opportunity to pass out to stationary shooters. When ihe s being fronted, you need people finding open lanes and constantly attacking the basket, which is something Battier has never done, so why even bother asking him to start now. I am sure he wants to but he doesn't have the quickness and talent to make those plays.

You are asking for something which Battier cannot give you. If he could we would have won a series against the Jazz.

The OP's "legitimate concern" when out the window when he admitted shane wasn't being passed the ball when open, are we now going to argue under the assumption he wouldnt have taken those shots if he was passed the ball??

uhhh forget Shane's offense and forget Yao for a min there, how about Shane be Shane by at least holding Roy to a decent percent? Shane has always been a bust come playoffs time.

I'm more concerned with him stepping up defensively. I think it is about time that Roy is guarded by Battier, not Artest. He's just not fast enough.

uhh and in case EVERYONE here is missing, we scored 103 points at 50% shooting! So its not because we didn't go to Yao (which obviously we should do more), its because we couldn't frigging stop Roy and Aldridge, both of them ripped us a new one. I blame Shane and our defense for the loss, plain and simple. Yao was also very very tentative in defense because he didn't want to pick up a foul. Everytime Roy ran into him and scored because Yao would just put his hands up to not commit a foul. At the end that hurt us more than it helped since Yao didn't get to score.

How about you pay attention during the game? I'm not sure where the idea that roy got his 40 on shane came from. Ron was on roy most of the time. and do you understand what a pick is? It's when they completely stop you from guarding a player, God wouldn't stand a chance against a pick, especially the moving picks Przybilla sets, so why would ron or shane?

To stop it you need good defensive rotations AS A TEAM. One guy isn't going to beat a pick. The reason why they forced roy into bad % int he past is because they collpased on him, with ron or shane chasing him and yao or deke cutting him on the front. The reason ron or shane will always be chasing him is because the pick holds them up, so what happens if we dont have a center who can cut him off? He'll score. What happened last night? We didn't have a center who could cut him off most of the game.

I agree ron has looked slow, but they're picking off whoever is on roy, and most of roys points came off of picks rather than one on one moves, so putting shane on him isn't going to make a big difference. I think it's more important to cut roy off after the pick AND before he gets to yao, otherwise he'll just get Yao in foul trouble. they need someone to rotate in front of Roy after shane/ron are picked off, basically what Yao or deke usually does, that may mean having to foul him sometimes, but i rather Scola or landry pick those fouls up than Yao.

First, you need to watch the game. Ron was guarding Roy in the first and most of second quarter. Battier guarded Roy most of the second half. Ok so if Battier can't guard Roy coz of the pick, why even have a defensive specialist in there?? At least Ron contributes on the offensive end inconsistent it maybe.

Anyway, reality is on this board, we give Shane ALL the credit for his defense whenever the guy he defends shoots poorly, NOT the team. Now when its convenient, we blame the team defense. Nice.

Not true. Just because Shane and Ron can't do it does not mean it cant be done.

I have seen Bruce Bowen guard his man very well even against pick and roll. Bowen does a marvelous job of fighting thru picks and sticking to his man. I have seen him do this to Dirk, Ray Allen, Rick Hamilton, and yes, even Brandon Roy, who made the ill advised decision to turn it into Roy vs. Bowen contest, and lost.

I don't think I ever seen a starter that wasn't a PG take less than 5 shots in the playoffs.

This isn't about Battier's defense, this is about Shanes offensive production. Or lack of offensive production no matter what the case is.

The point is, if all Shane can take is 3 shots a game as a starter, it is going too hurt our starting 5 more than help, which is why Ron Artest jacked up 20 shots in game 2. I rather see Battier and Ron take 20-25 shots combined not 23 and Artest taking 20 of those.

Even if shane hits only 25-30% of his shots, it's still better than Artest having 8-20 nights in the playoffs.

tim duncan... tim duncan...name someone who's done it that doesnt have a defensive pf/c waiting for roy. It sgoes back to what i said, if u have an aggressive Yao and deke there to protect the rim, then roy will slow down after he gets by because he's not going to want to challenge them every time. This is what he himself said prior to the series. He hesitates when he's chased by a good defender and facing a good shot blocker. Shane and ron can fight through the pick and catch up, but only when roy hesistates because of yao/deke.

Bowen does the same, he catches up because of Duncanc's intimidation, once you're picked, youre picked, the only way you can get back in front of your man is if the pick was a poor one, your man slows down or stops, or your man is slow. Roy isn't slow and Przybilla's picks are solid or illegal.

true, but it goes back to the OP pointing out shane wasn't given the ball when open in game 2, and he scored 11 in game 1, so i dont see why it's worth discussing so far in this series.

It's more than just Tim Duncan. Like I said, Bruce Bowen does an amazing job fighting thru pick and rolls. Battier and Ron do not. Players who are guarded by Bowen think they have lost Bowen but they soon find out he has fought thru the pick and he is right under their skin.

I'm actually about to start a thread about it, no so much about shane, but more about Przbilla's picks

Its not like if Battier doesnt shoot nobody else on the team will shoot, like the shot clock's just gonna run out. SOMEONE's gonna get a shot attempt on the possesion, just most the time it wont be Battier.

But he makes it too easy for the other team to gameplan off him off him and double others. Or he makes it too easy to get himself shut down, cuz he's too sucky to create.

Brandon Roy uses picks, sure. But he was creating off open dribbles too on Artest and Battier. Battier just plain needs to step it up. But that goes for everyone. It'd be nice if Battier was more a wild card
