I was checking the blazers message boards yesterday and after the game, all they did was blame the refs for their horrible loss to us. Even on espn the herd right now, theyre calling out the blazer fans and jazz fans for blaming the refs for their woes.....
I hate that mentality, because believing that the refs have no impact is also a joke. All in all, what stunned blazer fans was the fact that Yao wasn't drawing foul after foul. Honestly, the refs let these two teams play, and in a lot of ways gave us the benefit of the call early. The other issue is Adelman has constructed a drastically efficient offense whose primary goal is getting to the line. Look at how they were in the penalty in almost every quarter with >5 minutes each time. That's unseen in the league. This offense, the point guards, the way Artest drives, Yao's ability to overcome double teams, all leads to drawing the foul. That means the whistle goes off, a lot. A cursory examination would make it seem like Houston is getting the benefit of the call when in actuality Houston is just purposely just getting the call. Look, if we didn't actually get those calls we'd have a right to say the refs cost us the game. It's not an excuse, it's the truth of the matter.
What about the 2 bogus fouls on Yao? Lets not forget the hacking on him. I think the refs are goin to give game 2 to the blazers out of pity, but they shouldn't.
The game was officiated loosely. While that might make the losing team think they aren't getting their due from the refs, an objective observer knows that both teams were allowed to play a very physical game. Luckily for us, that's one step up from our usual officiating quality, and we played well to boot. Bottom line, to say that someone losing by 25+ is the result of one thing is to be oblivious. There were many reasons they lost, and the officiating probably isn't even on the list, though a selective sample of certain plays might make someone think so in a game where the players were allowed to play a very physical game on both sides.
well the reason why they are scared of us is if Yao is inefficient scola can also punish them in the post
That's just stupid. Maybe if they weren't blown out, one could listen to those complaints without chuckling. We saw plenty of calls go against us that were clearly called wrong. I'm sure they had their share. But, they evened out pretty much. What...were they expecting to go to the FT line 30 more times than they did? They still wouldn't have won.
Umm, we do that too.... Most of them are saying that refs had something to do with it, obviously they were not blaming the entire game on the refs.
We do that because when they don't call the fouls correctly on our man player ie Yao then they basically decide the game by making him come out of it.
If the refs are bad in game two and we lose by 25 or 30, it's not the ref's fault. Those margins are not due to bad officiating. On a related but seperate issue, I've given up trying to figure out how the post game is called. One game Yao is hammered, no call. Another game he's touched, call. The inconsistency post players deal with now ust be infuriating. And has anyone noticed that moving screens and picks really don't get called anymore.Every big I see slides over or leans into the guy he's supposed to be screening. The only time I see it called is when some guys get plastered by one.
If the game was decided by less than 10 points I would give it some credibility, but they got destroyed. Stop complaining and move on to game 2.
Think the game this year at Cleveland where Yao had a bogus foul called on him early on in each of the first 3 quarters. That game was very close. If Yao charges over people going to the rim, or hacks folks on defense, we wont complain about the reffing when he has to sit down. Fortunately for us, he doesnt make the dumb fouls like he used to when he was younger and get himself out of the game. Well, unless you count that dumb reach in against Denver.
Mhmm, but if we lose by 27 to the Jazz, I can assure you it's still not the refs' fault. Nearly all sensible people can realize one cannot attribute a blow-out loss to bad calls.
I was displeased at a couple of the calls made against Yao. Fernandez ran directly into a standing-still Yao at about the 7:10 mark in the second quarter, and it was called a blocking foul. There was a make-up call on the other end, but I don't want our centerpiece chilling on the bench with 4 fouls, if it can be helped. Also, Roy's flop was some pansy-ish behavior. At least Pryzbilla had to stand up and play after there was a no-call on his flop, and Yao easily scored over his prone body. Ha. If they just don't give anyone any flop calls, I'll be ok. I was yelling at Scola and Battier to stand the freak up when they went down, and I'm glad they ignored them too. No flops. + No skirts. + No Jazz. = Real basketball.
