Muholland Drive is a bigger mystery than these cryptic messages. Actually, David Lynch is behind these cryptic messages. In a month we'll find out that this entire sequence was an illusory alternate-reality. What's actually happened is that Rockets are to pick 5th, not 1st. There was no Ming Hysteria, there was no Steve Francis Demand, there never was Erik Zhang. If you pay attention, the only thing that is real is a coupon for a free order of eggrolls (with a $25 minimum purchase) found in the ValuPack Junk Mail every Wednesday .
let's come at this from a different direction. instead of trying to figure out what Doc's post means [who could?], let's talk about why Doc or Clucth or Oily might be trying to hide something to begin with. you tell something in a riddle for 1 of 2 reasons: 1) you just want to have fun 2) you don't want them to know immediately what's going on so. . . what would Clutch or Doc want to keep hidden? if the Rockets were really just going to draft Ming, why would they want to hide that? well, they wouldn't want to hide it from any other NBA teams. they don't have to. they don't have to ask any other teams' permission because they own the #1 pick. might they want to hide it from the Chinese? possibly. if the Chinese want Ming to be picked #1 badly enough, and if the Chinese believe that the Rockets will pick Ming #1 no matter what, then that gives the Rockets very little bargaining leverage with the Chinese in terms of working out their agreement. on the other hand, if the Chinese believe that the Rockets might trade their pick to another team who would definitely pick Jay Williams first, then that might motivate the Chinese to give in to some of what the Rockets want. if the Chinese think they've got the Rockets over a barrel, then they might make negotiations so tough that the Rockets would just trade the pick to Chicago or New York who, no matter how highly the Chinese think of Houston, we know they'd prefer. so the Rockets might not want the Chinese to know that they're going to take Ming no matter what. but on the other hand. . . if the Rockets had made a decision to trade the pick, why would they want to hide that? I can think of at least a few reasons. for one, they might want to hide it in order to avoid the backlash from the pro-Ming crowd and the hype and momentum that's been building since last sunday. for two, if teams are not allowed to make trades until a certain day, then the Rockets would have to "hide" the deal until it was legal for them to make it. that wouldn't mean that they didn't have an agreement in place, though. for three, if they have a trade agreement in place, they might not want other teams to know what the agreement was in the hopes that other teams would jack up their offers to try to beat the "agreed-upon" one. but, to get back to my original point, to me the key in trying to decipher all the posts is this: someone wants to obscure the Rockets' intentions. why? I have no idea what all the "threeway" and "countdown from 14" stuff means. follow the money.
so you're saying this is more like Fight Club? and yao is just another Tyler Durdon: the guy that we want on our team that seems perfect and cool, until you find out that he is just a nut job slash alter ego developed by rocket fans subconscious' to help with the problem at center and to help us cope with the loss of dream, but all the while he is not real. or am i reading too much into it?
The Rockets will draft Ming. The Rockets organization is going through the motions, making everyone believe this is the player they want. The Bulls will draft Jay Williams. Same story. Jay Will is/was in Chicago for 2 whole days. But a 3-team trade (Bulls, Clips, Rox) will see these players on different teams than those that drafted them. And you know Golden State's been on the phone to these teams, too.
chievous, you put entirely too much effort into that post. We're going to draft Ming. Doc is just screwing around. Anything that happens to shore up the SF spot is a bonus. The draft is 5 weeks away. Simplify. Do you guys really think that an elaborate 3 team trade has been ironed out 5 weeks in advance? The Rockets (actually Les and Carroll) ironed out the trade w/ NJ last year... what at pick #10? #11? Earlier? Later? The point being, it was draft night, in the flow. Talk about everything, consider everything... I just drove all over Salt Lake Valley looking at patio furniture... available to any and all options. Upon being well versed in the patio furniture world (can you believe there are such things as 9K tables/umbrellas?!? WTF?) we decided upon the first, most obvious thing that we looked at, a 300$ job at the friggin' grocery store. The Rockets have a lot of time to still be open. But... if they decide upon anything other than a simple and obvious win like a 7'5" 22 year old shooting guard... a player that will infuse enthusiasm into the community, I will be utterly floored. I'll be intrigued, but I'll be floored. BTW, if the Rockets ever acquire a pot head that doesn't respect his teammates or himself to abide by his employer's rules (however arguably unfair they might be) I'll lose any semblance of respect that I have for this franchise. Luckily I don't have to worry about this, since of course the Rockets are going to take Ming
the funny thing, achebe, is that my post took no effort at all. I type 30,000 word papers for breakfast. brevity is my enemy. and stuff. anyway, you're probably right about Ming.
I AM SO DAMN CONFUSED!!!! If the deal is a 3 way trade - why wouldn't the Rockets wait until draft night? Has any team in NBA history every traded picks (and players) weeks before the draft? The only reason this would make sense, is to help the team drafting ming. Any team that is going to go through all this hassle, would probably want several weeks to work out the details for Ming. If the Rockets spent 6 weeks trying to negoitate, and then decide to pull out - that would severly hurt the team wanting Ming. Damn this is confusing!!! DOC DID SAY THAT THE FACTS WILL BE SHOWN IN THIS THREAD, PLEASE HURRY DOC!!!! Might just be that Ming will be here in 14 days to do a workout.
Maybe the "countdown to 14" means Ming is coming into Houston for a workout on June 14? Remember, Ming is expected to be outside of the United States with the Chinese basketball team until July. Perhaps the Rockets contacted China and are getting Ming to visit Houston himself? I agree that Doc's trying to tell us something new, but his signature, the emphasis on simplicity, his hint that Troy's information was incorrect, and the mention of takeout all seem to point to Ming.
Manny Ramirez: Well, he's the one that comes closest! And I thought it was gettinchandlered? Oh well, the Bulls still suck. (j/k gb) Spoiler alert! That movie took me two times through to "get it," and I'm not sure I get it yet. I believe the first 2/3rd (until the camera shoots right through that blue box) is a movie-within-the movie. The actual movie at that point is the process and filming of a movie, while the last 1/3 is real life after making that movie. This explains how the people have different roles in the various parts of the movie. Can't really explain it well, but that's what I drew from it. It really takes 2 times watching it to understand it well enough to even try to come to a conclusion.
This should answer it all: http://www.salon.com/ent/movies/feature/2001/10/23/mulholland_drive_analysis/
I think Doc is telling us that Troy's info was correct but no longer accurate. One of the participant's in a potential 3-way folded or, like someone else mentioned, we called Stevie's bluff. We're drafting Ming. The simplest solution. All the political BS with China will work it's way out. China is pragmatic. Once Yao starts swatting shots, slamming alley-oops, hitting 15-20 footers, and generally making Stevie look even more like an All Star, even Stevie will be glad he's coMING!
