Your little sister's situation is extremely serious. She needs to be evaluated by a speech-language pathologist and begin therapy. Has she started school? If so, this should be able to be arranged through the school.

Wow... my 3 year old sister can do some talking. Not fluently, but getting better as time pass.

Can she say a short phrase like, "I'm tired, I'm hungry?"

Have you only consulted one doctor only? If so, I would see another doctor asap.

Nope. She can't say anything thats whats scares me the most. You would think she would be able to say some type of words, but none at all.

That is a bit worrisome. I am actually taking a Child Language Development class at the moment, and most babies, if not all, are able to distinguish sounds and words by 16-24 months. 5 years old is really extreme, you might want to see some type of speech-language specialist.

Did she have her hearing tested?

I agree, you guys should seek another opinion....at least to find out what is going on...

You should be able to access some type of state program that will handle this. I'm not in Texas so I don't know the name of the specific program there. Have your mom call your local elementary school and ask to speak to the head of the special education program. That person should be able to tell her how to access the appropriate services.

Did the doctor actually say this? If so, he/she should find another line of work. Something has to be seriously wrong. Your doctor should have recommended a specialist to test your sister.

Most common cause is some sort of deafness. After that, there are a number of things it could be.

If she has not had her hearing test, like really tested by an audiologist, not the thing the pediatrician does. She should call an ENT offices (as they all generally work together) get an dual appointment with the audiology & speech path doctor. They can generally test her hearing and use a scope to look at her throat (which if needed can be done in the office during that visit) and try to rule out some main causes.

How has she been otherwise growing up? Has she met milestones.

Yes her hearing as been teasted by the doctor that said she was fine. But I took my own word for it and its seen like she can hear pretty fine. I could be in one room and she could be in another room and I would call her and she would come. Another reason why I think her hearing is pretty fine is that I could be in the kitchen and tell her to go in the roon with her sister while I'm cooking and she would do just that.
