This has been a real crappy few months. I lost my job, got dinged from schools that I was sure I would get into and now got a call from the bank that someone is withdrawing money from my accounts.

How does someone withdraw money without an ATM card?

Someone could've copied the magnetic stripe on your ATM card. Have you been to any shady convenience stores lately?

its happened to me a couple years ago

someone in california (im in texas) went to the bank and withdrew large sums of money from my savings account.

fortunately, after 45 days of investigation, the bank refunded the money.

If Artest taught me anything this season it would be, Shoot first, ask questions later. I pass this word of advice on to you.

Seems like if the bank is already calling you about it, they already know something is wrong. That bodes well for them investigating it and ruling in your favor.

How old are the transactions? Reason I ask is that I check my bank account and the previous day’s transactions online every morning when I get to work. It’s just a part of my morning routine.

This is precisely why I never use an atm card. Hope the recovery of your money is as pain free as possible.

You can actually just go to the bank to withdraw money and believe it or not a lot of cashiers will not ask for ID. I know the first time I withdrew money from my credit union savings account the cashier did not ask for ID.

I actually have several bank accounts. I joined the credit union because usually no bank can beat their rates around here. Also, my credit union has account alerts. My savings in it currently sits at $7020.16 but if it drops below $7,000 I get a phone call, text message on my cell, an email, and a mailing. It does that for every $100 increase so if it goes up to $7100 I'll get the same warnings if it drops below that number. Plus I check it everyday. I feel pretty safe about it.

Once when I went to deposit a $100 check in my mom's account (so I didn't need ID), they handed me $100. I said, "Uh, I'm depositing." The manager standing behind the girl didn't look to happy.

    This was at Chase.

it just seems like an unnecessary risk not to ask for ID when withdrawing money from an account.

Yeah, I mean cashiers probably don't really care as long as their drawers balance at the end of the day. I've cashed checks before without using ID at another institution as well. Maybe some news place needs to do an expose on this or something.

Yeah I understand that completely too but with the alerts setup I feel pretty safe, I mean my other institutions don't have the same security setup that my credit union does except for the cashiers part but like I said it has happened at other places as well.
