Behemoth, Cannibal Corpse, Dimmu Borgir, and Sufjan Stevens usually do the trick.

Silversun Pickups, Explosions in the Sky, Spoon

Mellow stuff. Not too loud, not too quiet

I never studied to music... couldn't concentrate. Of course, we didn't have anything close to iPods when I was in school.

Chill/ambient instrumentals. Cognitive psychology claims lyrics - or even engaging instrumental songs - only serves to distract you.

I can't listen to songs with lots of lyrics when studying.

Normally it's a rotation of String Quartet tributes, Groove Armada, RJD2 and classical music.

To each his own, I prefer a good cycle of The Mars Volta. It starts off crazy, but when I get in the zone, my brain ignores all the noise.

I agree. I listen to Lymbyc System or The Album Leaf when I'm reading.
