and we can afford a loss if spurs beat gs and lose to hornets....

under both scenerios we can take a loss therefore:

    the gs game DOESNT MATTER

the hornets game is the constant under both situations

You are correct. The Spurs losing their last 2 would allow us to win the division by going 1-1.

The Spurs/Warriors games on Monday is NOT a "don't care" for Houston.

That's good to know! So we should cheer for the jazz to win tomorrow.

Its because of the tiebreaker. Right now we are tied in head to head, the next tiebreaker is division record, which we are tied in the loss column but not in the win column. Due to the fact that both of our last games are division games, any one loss means we lose the tiebreaker to SAS, unless they also lose to the Hornets. But since the Golden State game isn't a division game, it doesn't effect the tiebreaker at all.

Everybody needs to understand something. If both the Spurs and the Rockets win out the Rockets win the tie breaker. The Spurs have one more division win RIGHT NOW, but we have one more divisino game left than they do. We own the later tie breakers.

This has been said a million times but people are still making this assumption because people say that the Spurs have a better division record. THEY'VE PLAYED MORE DIVISION GAMES YOU SILLY GEESE!

I saw, but I've seen people have to explain it multiple times to different people. You might know it, but someone else might not. And no one has really explained why it is the case that the Golden State game doesn't make a difference other than to say that it doesn't, so I figured I would tell people why.

I see. Good looking out. It took me a little time but I finally figured it out earlier.

This is how I would completely break it down for anybody that is still confused. Here are all the possible remaining outcomes from the Spurs' side of things...

    ------------------------------

The 2 possible cases where SA beats NOH:

If SA beats GS and NOH, we have to go 2-0 to win the division.

If SA loses to GS and beats NOH, we still have to go 2-0 because if we went 1-1, we'd lose the divisional tiebreaker.

    --------------

The 2 possible cases where SA loses to NOH:

If SA beats GS and loses to NOH, we have to go 1-1 to win the division.

If SA loses to GS and NOH, we still have to go 1-1 because if we went 0-2, we'd lose the divisional tiebreaker.

    ------------------------------

In both sections above, you see that what the Rockets have to do to win the division is the same regardless of what SA does against GS.

I am not happy with the Playoffs position right now because the Rockets are likely to drop to #5 seed by losing to Dallas.

Unless the Spurs or Portland lose one of their games, which i don't think they will.

That's why tonight's game, i was pissed that the refs literally handed the Spurs the win over the Kings. Instant replay clearly show the Spurs player did not get the ball off on time as the red light go on. This is huge HUGE mistake!!

actually Kenny Natt handed the Spurs the win, why on earth would you go to Beno (coldest guy on floor) in the last minute when Hawes was doing the damage?

That's a great way to explain it, but the important thing to know in this scenario is that the tiebreaker between us and San Antonio has gone to division record. So that means, we lose one game, we won't have the tiebreaker unless San Antonio loses the game against New Orleans. Meaning, the only way we can win the division if we lose a game is if we are tied and own the tiebreaker or if we flatout have a better record. And both of those scenarios require that San Antonio lose to the Hornets.

Anyways, I hope us arguing about this has cleared up the scenario for everyone.

This loss essentially had no bearing on the Rockets position in the playoffs. They would have to have also lost to the Warriors for this loss to have any meaning to the Rockets. Again... for reasons we've already pointed out in this thread.

So unless you had money riding on that game, there is really no reason to be mad.

I thought it was $2000, DD?

But anyways, this game is a "care" game for us. We just can't take any chances here, if we lose a game, we need a "insurance" game like this just in case.
