    Hey Guys,

I'm turning 25 at the end of the month. Currently on my family's insurance, I told my parents that I would start looking for my own plan and start paying for it myself. I have no idea where to start.

I've never been in an accident, and I've had maybe 2 tickets that were cleared with defensive driving many years ago. It's just me by myself.

    2005 Acura TSX, Silver

Can you guys give me some tips on choosing a provider and plan?

i can tell you that i convinced my insurance carrier to give me the same discount they gave my Dad (because he was a customer of their's for ~20 years).. and that made my rate way lower than other people my age at the time.

However, that was with State Farm. I think if you don't have anything on your record, you'll get cheaper rates from Geico, Progressive, etc...at least based on the experience of friends of mine

Whatever insurer you choose just get more than the minimum policy amounts. It doesn't cost that much more to bump up to a 100/300 policy. That will protect you in case you are in an accident where you are at fault.

See if youi can do an online quote with Costco. They cut my insurance rates by about 60-65% a few years ago. Like a dummy I had just stuck with State Farm for almost 20 years before trying to see if I could cut my rates. I have an '04 TL and State Farm wanted me to pay something like $800-$900 every 6 months when I bought it. I'm paying about $325-$350 every 6 months now.

I'm an independent agent. I've hooked a couple guys up with insurance on the board. I shop your rates through the following companies to get you the best deal:

    safeco
state auto-->got the best rates going right now
    travelers
    progressive
    Kemper
    Unitrin
    Metlife
    Century 21
    The Hartford
    Allstate
    Encompass
    Universal
I think i have a few more but those are off the top of my head but all companies are AM Best A rated or better.

Last guy on the board I did his insurance I saved him a ton of $$. Black Sombrero, where you at?

Stay away from Progressive or United Auto/Old Farmers. If you get in a wreck, good luck on getting a coherent adjuster if/when they decide to come inspect your vehicle, and they will take their time paying out anything and low ball you every chance they can. I had to get a lawyer to fight their bull****.

State Farm is by far the best, but you pay more. It's totally worth it when you have the accident though, and you will. Geico I've also heard good things about.

Check out the Texas Department of Insurance Complaint Index.

Don't look at the number of complaints but look at the complaint index. The index is a ratio, so it's adjusted for large and small companies.

If there is a high complaint index, then the insurance company might be poor on playing claims.

Been with Geico over 20 years and they are stellar. You won't be sorry.
