the 93 team with Kenny/Sam and Max was a perfect blend of guards

streaky scorer/defensive player, good shooter/ball handler, good scoring, slasher guard

It's almost Easter, we remember you Max!

Kenny/Sam + Max - Fit together, figured out how to win it all.

Rafer and T-Mac - Total crap, no chemistry.

    Kenny/Sam and Max - Champions.

Rafer and T-Mac - washed up 1st round losers.

Even with all of Max's issues, he can still say he has tasted the manna and honey of the NBA.

How do you know his mother doesn't also have a drug and temper problems?

The point is about child support. Why should she get paid cause she got pregnant? He has to maintain a life, home, electricity, food and everything else for when the child visits him. I dont care if he had custody, why should she pay him child support?

It doesn't matter whether they are a one night stand or were a family. The bottom line is that the only rights that should be number 1 is the kids right to spend equal time with both its parents. Forcing the man or woman to pay money to the other only complicates that and doesn't encourage that.

And what do you mean yes it's good to spend time with your kids? I think it's great. Show me one kid that would rather have a monthly check instead of spending time with their parent. You can't compare a monthly check to a parent/child relationship in any form or fashion.

And it's your mistake assuming that I said every woman that gets child support is a gold digging w****. A lot of women don't even want it, but the court orders it anyway. It's not just one night stands that end in child support, long time families break up and child support is ordered as well.

So what athletes are gone a good portion of the year. Many other professions are too. Does that mean that a pilot is not qualified to take care of his/her own kids? You think athletes don't have any family to support and help them like a woman does?

The bottom line is that there are many reasons to determine which parent the child lives with primarily, but monthly checks is just a crock of doodoo. The court should only be concerned with the childs right to be able to spend time with and get to know both of their parents to understand their lineage.

Monthly checks only complicate and hamper that. If a man loses a job, misses some payments and the mother says you can't see your child, can he take her to court to see the child without going to jail? How is that in the chlld's best interest? No, that hasn't happened to me, but I know a lot of people it has.

Putting Mad Max in jail because of his inability to make payments that someone with an NBA salary can make is not only wrong from the beginning, but also a crime by the state against the father and child!

Sadly, McGrady still has a better chance of making the hall of fame.

And yes, I remember those days...

TOUGH ACT TO FOLLOW/Maxwell: Madness is behind me

    By CARLTON THOMPSON
    Staff

    .

DALLAS - The artist formerly known as Prince has dropped the goofy symbol and returned to His Royal Badness. The basketball player formerly known as Mad Max doesn't intend to follow suit.

From the day he set foot in Philadelphia, Vernon Maxwell has been telling anyone who would listen that he doesn't want to be Mad Max anymore.

""I'm just Vernon," he keeps saying.

There will be 16,285 interested observers at The Summit tonight who would like to make that determination for themselves as the self-proclaimed ""changed man" makes his first trip to Houston as a member of the Philadelphia 76ers.

When Maxwell glances at the rafters, he'll see the 1994 championship banner he helped hang and the 1995 banner the team won after he took a leave of absence during the playoffs. Both are sure to remind Maxwell that he has gone from the defending world champions to the worst team in the NBA. But Maxwell insists he won't dwell on that reality.

""I don't think too much about Houston," he said. ""I watch them

play all the time. Those guys are still my friends. But I don't think about playing in Houston or that they're winning and I'm losing. I don't think about that at all."

And then, he added: ""With Clyde (Drexler out with a knee injury), they could use me now. But they'll be OK."

It was the Drexler trade last February that ultimately paved Maxwell's road out of town. Drexler cut into Maxwell's playing time, and the Rockets found out just how Mad Maxwell could get. He admittedly faked an injury and left the team during a playoff series in Utah.

Maxwell knows many Houston fans never will forgive him for that and other off-the-court episodes, but he also expects there to be a group of fans who appreciate the buzzer-beaters and his championship contributions.

""I feel the crowd reaction will be mixed (tonight)," Maxwell said with a chuckle. ""But it will probably be a little more of one than the other. I can't dwell on that. It really doesn't matter. I really couldn't tell you how the fans are going to react."

But if Maxwell doesn't care for the reaction, don't expect him to charge into the stands, as he did last year in Portland. That Vernon Maxwell, he says, is gone.

""I made some mistakes in the past, but I'm a lot better person since I came to Philadelphia," Maxwell said. ""I'm a lot smarter and wiser. I've matured every year, but especially this season. You don't see me getting into a lot of altercations or arguing with the refs. I'm not about that anymore. The people who come to the game (tonight) will see that. I've settled down."

Those in attendance tonight also will see a man on mission. Remember the Alamodome?

When Maxwell played for the Rockets, he always seemed to save his best performances for the San Antonio Spurs, another former team. Two years ago, he beat the Spurs with a shot at the buzzer and then taunted the crowd with a little ""Shakedown" dance.

Maxwell, who missed Philadelphia's previous game this season against the Rockets, would love to dance a similar jig tonight at The Summit.

""I'm going to love playing against the Rockets," he said. ""My dream scenario would be to throw one in at the buzzer so I could shake it up a little bit."

Sixers coach John Lucas knows a motivated Maxwell can be a valuable weapon to have in the arsenal, but he doesn't want Maxwell to make too much of one game.

""He's got to get throw through it with his emotions in check," Lucas said. ""I told Vernon this really isn't the team he was with. This is Sam Mack, Eldridge Recasner "

Sam Cassell, Mario Elie and Kenny Smith are very close to Maxwell, but the former Rockets guard said people would be surprised to learn that Hakeem Olajuwon was his best friend on the team.

""Dream was someone I looked up to," Maxwell said. ""I really respected him a lot for the way he changed his life with his religious beliefs. I'm sure it's hard for people to believe, but we were really good friends. I felt like he genuinely cared about me as a person, not just a basketball player.

""He knew that I was one of the guys who was going to play hard every night. But Mario, Sam and Kenny are my boys, too. Kenny and I are so close that my kids call him Uncle Kenny. So it's going to be great to spend some time with all of those guys."

Tonight will be one of the few highlights for Maxwell in a season that has included 43 losses in 54 games. And as the team's leader, Maxwell is looked upon to hold everything together and to keep the losses in perspective.

Who would have thought that possible when he was in Houston?

""I understand the position I'm in," Maxwell said. ""I'm playing

with a lot of guys who have never established themselves in the league. I have a lot of responsibility here, but I like that. Sometimes, I have to catch myself on the court because if I lose it, these young guys think they can lose it, too. It's a demanding role, and it's new for me. I'm trying to carry myself in a professional manner and let my basketball do the talking.

""Other than the losing, it's been OK. I love the city, I love my coach, and I love my teammates. But the losing has been tough. It's a lot tougher at the end of the game when you don't have Dream (Olajuwon) to throw it in to. I'm having to create a lot more shots at the end of games."

Tonight is about more than sticking it to the organization that gave up on Maxwell after he gave up on it. Tonight is about closing the book on the best and worst years of his career so far.

There will be other trips to Houston donning the enemy colors, but none more tantalizing than the first time. While Maxwell said he enjoyed his time in Houston, he maintains he was misunderstood outside the locker room.

""I felt like a lot of the people who didn't even know me were unfair," he said. ""But there were a lot of people in Houston who really liked me, too. I like Philly. It's a blue-collar town, and the people are very friendly - very genuine. They don't judge you for situations you've been through in the past. After all, it's the City of Brotherly Love. People who sit down and get to know me realize I'm not this bad person everyone thinks I am. I'm not a lunatic. I'm not going to go out and murder someone. I'm just Vernon."

And love him or hate him, he's back.

I dont know if she has problems and never said she didn't, but my question had two parts, would you rather have him be with a guy who had problems as long as he buys him stuff? Because that's what it seems like.

did you get screwed for a bunch of child support or what? I dont see how anyone can't see the difference between a fam and a one nighter, unless you have a biased view. A family decides tohave a kid, to support it, emotionally and financially, whether you like it or not, money does play a significant role. It's not fair for two people to make a joint decision and agree to do it, and then for one to bail out, man or woman. On a one nighter, each side is on it's own, there's no expectations, no promises, no agreements, but if it's consentual then you should be responsible for at least the minimum needed to help, not completely support, the child.

Are you saying visitation should be forced? That's not goign to solve anything when some parents don't want to see their kids.

Just because i said it's "good" to spend time with your kids doesn't mean I dont think it's great. It's good as oppose to being bad.

Again, you're assuming every situation is the same. I promise you there's some kids who'd rather see the money than their parent, maybe it's a small %, but they're out there, and it's not because their gold diggers, but because they have their reasons for hating their parent, but still want them to be responsible in some way.

My point was you're argument was all about spending time with kids, but that's not a great argument to make when defending ball players. It just isn't. the player can be a great guy, it could be shane battier, but that's still going to hurt you in court, period. It's not me saying they HAVE to be bad parents because they 're not around, it's just not going to help them make a case, that's just a fact.

And did you not read my post about Maxwell not paying his child support even when he was an NBA player?? He's not the victim here. He's broke now because he wasted his money. How much do you think he gave away in fins and suspensions? In drugs? He gave half a mil to the women he gave herpes to knowingly. He's got a track record full of mistakes and bad moves. He's not in jail for not being able to pay NOW. He's in jail for showing lack of responsiblity for YEARS. Maybe he can argue the amount is too large for him now that's he's no longer a ball player, but he's known about the kid for years, why not save money? The big thing is he couldnt even do it with a ball player's salary, that's unacceptable, maybe the mother is a gold digger, maybe she just wants his cash, but if that's the case you fight legally to fix that, you dont just let it pile up and ignore it.

But he was fearless. The man had ice water in his veins. His stats didn't show it, but I think his brand of crazy infected the Rockets in a positive way. The swagger, the attitude, the willingness to take big shots. He was Ron, before Ron was Ron, and he was a heck of a lot of fun to watch play.

Is this one of those legends that grows more and more positive like the legend of Ralph Sampson not driving people batty with his inconsistency from game to game? lol. Max drove people nuts because for every great play he made, he would do something idiotic as well. But we'll remember him for his great play in the playoffs and championships. And I'll sure remember him for choking on the team during the 2nd championship run and being booted by the team for not being a team player. And I'll definitely remember him for not paying child support! True Rockets fans, don't let tinman let you think this man was a Rockets great - he wasn't. He hit some important shots and made clutch plays, but in the end he betrayed the Rockets and they rewarded him by booting his ass off the team. Now I'll let tinman return to posting his random articles from over a decade ago like that'll ever make up for the choke job this clown pulled on the Rockets to culminate his Rockets career. Go Rockets! :)

Wow, I forgot that Max was a part of the Spurs tankers that ended up with the Duncan draft pick. So I guess its fair to say he had a big part in 6 championships; 2 for the Rockets and 4 for the Spurs.

Maxwell was a nutjob, throwing a dumbbell at Herrera and running up the stands and punching a fan in the face.

you mean like game 7 nba finals game icers?

the first nba championship EVAR for Rockets?

the whole idea of "CLUTCH CITY"? if it weren't for Maxwell, you'd be a mod on the Mavericks bbs cause the Rockets wouldn't be here.

Maxwell is forever, and you can hate all you want, but God loves Tupac and Vernon, so don't be jealous.
