Hey, you have me confused with a conservative. Sweat shops are bad whether in Indonesia for Nike, Saipan (an alledgedly made in the USA slave camp that was a favorite of Tom Delay, the GOP and Jack Abramoff) or your favorite, Dubai.
I doubt that Dubai has a minimum wage and if so, I bet it is not enforced. Minimum wages in the US should be higher. Sorry conservos and Libertarians. The laborers in Dubai, if they get paid at all, are working too many hours and are too exhausted to buy anything.
Good to see a prosperous conservativecome out and say he don't have much problems for debtors prisons. Normally they talk about supply and demand and markets. It sounds so civilized and sort of scientific and all.
...and you know this beacuse?....you read it in an article? I don't think it's perfect over there, the laborers get no rights. However, Ii's just not as bad as some of you make it out to be......there are problems like this that exist across the globe, its due to over population, that`s the main problem. Unfortunately the weaképoor are always going to be abused.
Wow... Are people really defending debtor prisons in this thread? Are they really blaming this woman for her situation, when the only reason she's in debt is because her husband has a brain tumor? Are they really defending the complete lack of even the most basic labor rights; denying the outright lying by recruiting companies, the theft of their passports, and the theft of their rightly earned pay? "Oh, they should just go home, or they should never have come!" ARE YOU FRIGGEN KIDDING ME?!? It amazes me that some people will defend their (in this case, conservative) ideology even to the most extreme and deplorable of its implications. This is not some theoretical world. These are real people experiencing real suffering.
I don't think anyone is defending anything. You can't have your cake and eat it too. You can't say out of one side of your mouth the US had no right to invade Iraq and then turn around and criticize a country for their debt laws. If you goto another country, then you are at the mercy of their laws. Perhaps that is why people are literally dying to come to America. **** happens, all the time. You're are absolutely correct, this is not some theoretical world. There are real people experiencing real suffering. Keep that in mind while you're stuffing your mouth tonight while others in 3rd world countries are starving. Equality is equality, regardless of age, race, religion or nationality. Just because this woman is American doesn't make her any better than anyone else in this world. There are billions of people suffering outside of their will. This couple went over their for selfish reasons. I am not going to apologize because I have more pity on someone else.
This situation most definitely is her fault. She didn't know the laws in the country she lived in. She didn't have a clue what the finances in her household were like. She saw that her husband was confused and didn't protect him. She could have changed the outcome of this situation. She is responsible for her life and her husbands. Don't think that I am not sympathetic to her situation, but to blame it on laws that were there before she was is just plain silly.
This makes no sense. I can criticize whatever the hell I want to. I do keep the suffering of others in my mind constantly. What's your point? All suffering should be alleviated. The woman in the article is homeless and begging for food. The construction workers in Dubai live in concrete bunkers covered in their own feces. People in the servant class work 20-hour days and are beaten if they ask for a break. NONE OF THIS IS OK. So, again, I must ask you what the hell your point is?
Sure, yes, but there are practical considerations in real life that go beyond a philosophy book. Criticism is not valid without a reasonable alternative. There, I said it!
So you feel compassion for this woman who went to this country and exploited the poor working class and basically ended up in the same level as them?
I feel compassion for her as well and hope someone does end up helping her get back on her feet, but I agree there is some irony there. To be clear, if you live in the U.S. or any other first world country you are exploiting the poor. Sorry if that upsets some of you
Yes. I feel compassion for all existence. But if you are without sin, feel free to cast a stone her way.
