"Rescue Me": FX drama returns in top form for season five

"Rescue Me" gives you Michael J. Fox as you've never seen him. He's a long way from "Family Ties."

A wiseguy Fox is just one pleasure as this blistering FX drama returns at 10 p.m. Tuesday on FX. Yet Fox's presence is crucial, because he could bring more people to one of TV's best.

Hard to believe, but the drama about New York firefighters has been off the air for a year and a half. The time away gave the producers and writers time to sharpen the fifth season. Tommy Gavin (Denis Leary) deals with his father's death, a dead-end relationship with Valerie (Gina Gershon) and the possible loss of his job.

Leary is in fine, furious form, especially in the season's second episode. In memorable scenes, Tommy chews out a French author writing a 9-11 book and rips fellow firefighters for their stupidity. And, my, do they do some stupid things. "Rescue Me" is one of the funniest dramas, too.

The other guest stars this season include Maura Tierney of "ER," Kathleen Chalfant of "The Guardian," Tatum O'Neal, Lenny Clarke and Jerry Adler as a bizarre firehouse chief.

The bracing "Rescue Me" should help drama fans make it through the spring. The show will offer 22 episodes -- a bounty by cable standards. More good news: The series is slated to return for a sixth season of 18 episodes.

This is season 5 and I've been waiting for it for a long time...Pretty good tonight, but I expect it to get better...

The last season was just awful.

After a great season 1 and 2, the show has just been going downhill.

Ugh. I'm a huge fan of this show, but the first episode this season was boring. A year and a half off, and this is how they come back?

Hopefully it gets better.

Can't sleep tonight so I'm catching up on the new season.

I used to watch it with my dad but since I moved across town it became less of a priority. In fact, I actually thought I had missed an entire season (didn't realize it had been off the air for so long). Glad to see that wasn't the case.

I'm watching episode 3 as I type this...Sean just visited the doctor recommended to him by Franco lol
