i think the call was that the ball was pinned between wafer's hands (while he was going up for the shot) and yao's chest/body. the ball stayed pinned until wafer reached the floor again. if yao had been a defender, this might have been a jump ball. yao was an offensive teammate so it was a travel. i thought i saw the ball come free. if so then the refs got it wrong. if not then this is my best interpretation.
I am in no way saying it had any effect on the game's outcome, just mostly curious as to what everyone thought. DD
I didnt read past the first post but in my understanding anyone, including a teammate, can touch it other than Wafer and he can pick it up and take off dribbling as far as Im concerned. Haven't we all seen when a player loses his dribble and he cant touch the ball and so he shields a defender so a teammate picks it up and hands it right back to him? Yeah, bad call... Very bad call...
I remembered this way: 1. Von jumps or attempt to shoot the ball, ball miss fire and Von grabs the offensive rebound 2, While jumping for second shot, defenders came in along with Yao. 3. The Ball got knocked up in the air, while in air, Von regain control of the ball at the same time bumped Yao and knock him off balance. 4. Von landed but his feet moved Travel called
I haven't seen the play, but maybe it's a matter of possession? Von had possession of the ball when he went up, and had possession when he landed. Nobody else had possession in between, so it's a travel. Even though Yao touched the ball, he didn't have possession of it. Not sure - just speculating. I know that when a player jumps with the ball and gets tied up by a defender so he lands with it they call a jump ball. Has that always been the rule? I thought it used to be a travel. They call this even in the case where the defender doesn't grab the ball (and therefore could also be considered to have possession), but for example just gets one hand in to pin it against the offensive player. I think this should be called a travel as it rewards the defensive team for a good play moreso than having a jump ball.
The Rocket's basically gift wrapped that game for the Suns... There was so many horrible calls that went in our favor, I almost felt sorry for the Suns... Almost.
Well, when a defender knocks the ball away from an airborne offensive player, it's not a travel when the player regains possession and then returns to the court. So the question is whether or not Yao knocking the ball away is, by the book, the same as a defender knocking it away.
yea that was a bad call but it shouldn't have come to that...we completely blew it in the 4th. I wish we could put teams away when we need to
I would agree...EXCEPT! For some reason, Yao is the only guy in the league who gets the 3 second called on him regularly. The Rockets did get a number of favorable calls the other night (the one being discussed in this thread aside), but it seemed to me nearly every opportunity someone on the Suns was camping out in the lane. I think this is due to two factors: (1) for some reason, the refs have it in their head that the bigger, slower 7'6 dude is likely in the lane, whereas the still enormous but more athletic, veteran guy is probably moving around a bit more and stepping out of the lane. The other night, this didn't seem to be true - Shaq was pitching a tent in there, and (2) when Steve Nash starts dribbling around, the refs get stupid. They forget to call moving screens and completely ignore the offensive player in the lane (again, mostly Shaq) standing around waiting for Steve to pass him the ball or dribble some more or shoot - which as we all know, for Nash, usually takes a bit when he starts his dribble-itis (though for him, as opposed to the old Francis Rockets days, the dribble dribble dribble works). I think everyone has pretty much summed up the Wafer call. Tough call that at the end of the game probably shouldn't have been made, but had no impact on the game.
i think you're right.. could wafer have bounced the ball before he landed? or would they consider that a double dribble? bizarre play either way...
the thing is, the ball was still in von's hands even as he lost control of it, if he would have bounced it off of yao it would have been alright but since he never actually stopped touching the ball it's a travel it was a good call. the refs were on our side in this game
I was at a bar and I can't recall the play but years before Ronnie Nunn said when commenting about a Yao play where he went to shoot he lost control of the ball while shooting and got back it back in the air and was call for a travel. Ronnie said once you lose control of the ball when you get it back you can do whatever you want as a new possession no matter if you dribble the ball before of you lost control while shooting.
he never lost possession, i was angry too until i saw the replay and saw that he came down with the ball
Calls like that near the end of the game are frustrating as ****. But what about when Ron Artest was given two free throws...? Was that the right call? Call or no call, allowing the Suns to make that 15-0 run is unacceptable.
I've long accepted the fact that NBA officiating is just horrendous. In all aspects. Nothing amazes me with those clowns, er, referees, anymore.
