I was curious, so I looked it up. Its interesting to see how their team stats are fairly consistent since he went out. Who knows how effective he will be in the playoffs? While he hasn't been missed too much these days, i think his presence is absolutely necessary in the playoffs for the Lakers to succeed. http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-lakers-fyi27-2009mar27,0,4857670.story
When Lamar Odom steps up and plays like a borderline All-Star, the Lakers don't miss Bynum at all. This is what happened when Bynum went down. The question is what will Odom do in the later rounds of the playoffs. If he disappears, the Lakers will be in trouble. If he plays like a man-possessed, grabs 10-15 rebounds, hustles and doesn't do dumb things, the Lakers are probably the best team in the NBA. But relying on Odom is like predicting which way the wind will blow. With Bynum, the Lakers don't need Odom to play well in order to be a dominant, championship caliber team.
Am I the only one who hopes Bynum returns in full capacity so that if/when the Rockets meet the Lakers in the playoffs, they'll have a better matchup? I'd much rather see Yao against Bynum than Gasol, especially on the defensive end.
OK, yes, but when Odom is on his game, he is a much better player than Bynum and that more than makes up for a couple of blocked shots per game. When LO tatoos an 18/15 on the opposition, the Lakers are almost unbeatable. When he plays like a space cadet, then they miss miss Bynum's blocked shots.
Those stats are misleading I would think. They spent much of the year trying to reacquaint themselves with Bynum. They used a couple different starters at the 3 and everyone was trying to find their fit. At the time Bynum went out with injury he was coming on strong, he had some dominant games, the Lakers seemed to have figured it out and were about to ascend to the next level.

I'm completely with you on this. Bynum gives Yao someone he can guard while still defending the paint. He's also someone who won't try to front Yao. Gasol caused lots of problems towards the end of the last match getting around yao on the baseline to steal the ball. But unfortunately Phil Jackson's too smart and knows this too. As soon as Bynum starts getting owned, he'll switch to the Gasol/Odom lineup and let Bynum ride the pine.
