I used to kind of like the Comets, till I figured out womens basketball sucks! Now all u ladies in here aint got to get mad. Cause I also love tennis and I think womens tennis is much better than mens tennis. After the Rockets and Cowboys, Steffi was my favorite sports personality. So its not as if Im a sexist or anything but watching the WNBA is just plain boring.

I'm looking forward to it too.
I don't find it boring at all.
why do you feel that way? because
of the lack of dunks? I like the
    non-showboat aspect of the game.
You guys are missing out on some
    great basketball.

they barely run set plays. they just run up and down the floor as fast as they can. its basically just jump shooting. and yes no exiting plays like a dunk or anything like that. compared to the nba it does suck. its like driving a kia, when you have a benz. once you've driven the benz you dont want to drive the kia. just like once you've watched the exiting NBA you dont want to watch the boring W(annabe)NBA

I like to compare it to going to a high school football game. I could never get into it. The speed of the game was soo much slower. The skill level wasn't as good. The athleticism isn't there. The same goes for the WNBA. It's painfully slow. I'll admit it, I've seen a few Comets games on TV. And there seems to always be this 10 to 15 minute stretch where it's unbearable to watch. No one can put the ball in the basket. And it's not because good defense is being played. They just brick a lot of shots, miss layups, mishandle passes, and make poor decisions on the court. And not in the kind of way that the NBA does, but more in the way of a high school team. Plus, I can beat them in basketball. I can appreciate Women's tennis, where I know I'll get my ass kicked. Or even Women's track and field or Gymnastics. I know I'm inferior to these people. But I can handle WNBA players in the game of basketball. I don't watch sports to see people that can do things just as good or more likely worse than I can. I watch sports to see people do things that I can't do. Things that I wish and dream I could do. The WNBA does not provide fulfill that requirement to me.

well, i happen to think it's plenty "exiting". I like the great passes, ball-handling and teamwork. i enjoy a dunk as much as the next guy but lay-ups and jump shots are worth the same number of points. As for set plays, they have more structured offenses than NBA teams do. There is definately less one-on-one playground junk.

And I don't see why you have to compare it to the NBA in the first place. The league is 54 years old compared to just 4 for the WNBA. I'm sure you wouldn't have liked the style of play of George Mikan and co.

...Da Man, how do you know you can beat them in basketball? Do you mean all of them or just the lesser ones? Have you actually played one of them? Just curious

Well, I've played with Edwina Brown and she's suppose to be the number 1 pick in this years' WNBA draft. And she wasn't better than me.

See I've never understood this misconception that the WNBA has this structured offense or play fundamentally sound b-ball or have great execution. The execution is not good. When I see WNBA games, I see sloppy play. Fastbreak execution can look downright ugly at times. it's not real pretty. And it has nothing to do with dunking a basketball. If you want to watch good execution and fundamental play, watch the NCAA tournament for Princeton, Wisconsin, and what not.

Back in Mikan's era, basketball as a whole was relatively new to the masses. Women's basketball has been around for a long time at the high school and college level. It is just Women's pro ball in the U.S. is relatively new. These are supposedly the best women's players in the world. They have players that are have participated in the Olympics. Players that have been playing professionally in Europe for 7 or 8 years. Professional Women's basketball has been around for quite a while and basketball as a whole has been accessible to Women for decades. So the fact that the WNBA has only existed for 3 years is no excuse for their play.

OK, well congrats on beating Edwina. Maybe you should go up against Yolanda Griffith or Natalie Williams next and see how you do.
    (I don't think E.B. will go #1 overall BTW)

If you want excuses: The teams basically have no pre-season to warm up and get used to playing with each other. Plus most of the players play in Europe right up until the season starts and have no break in between. And there has been a lot of turnover in personnel and watering down of teams due to the league doubling in size in just 3 years. Most players get paid less than $40,000 which is less than half what they get paid in Europe (how motivated would you be if you were getting paid half for doing the same work?) Do you think women college players get the same "help" in balancing academics and athletics as their male counterparts? How much resources do you think most schools put into Women's hoops?

For someone who's watched only a few games you talk as if you are an expert on the subject.

This sounds like a familiar sports refrain. I've rarely played anyone better than me either...but did you win? [IMG]

For those of you who absolutely cannot stand womens' basketball, there is still a compelling reason to stay interested and even participate in their success: the Comets are an integral part of the potential success or failure of a new arena referendum.

Whether you like them or not, the Comets inspire a tremendous amount of enthusiasm and community pride that translates, hopefully, into votes. Supporting them, in many ways, is like supporting the Rockets at least from the standpoint of their staying in Houston.

I just think that they need to lower to goal to eight-feet. They would make more shots, and get an occasional dunk. :)

the Rockets team field goal % was .456

Outlaw, I totally agree on enjoying the WNBA play. Its not the same style as the NBA, but very enjoyable to watch and the skill level for the style they play is high enough to allow me to enjoy watching.

For anyone only watching the game to see dunks, you sure are missing a lot!!

Well.....I don't really watch the WNBA unless I'm really bored.

I am glad the Comets dominate the league, though.

I will be here, but not for the comets. I will be checkin up on the latest scoops and inside info on the rockets.

I think I mite tune into the Comets a little bit. I just plain hate baseball... damn it's so boring and slow. I sorta like the Astros though.

I keep up with the Comets in the same way that I keep up with the Astros,I watch the sports shows for the scores and recaps and if I'm around the house when their games come on,I'll watch. but I don't go outta my way to catch their games, like I do with the Rockets.

But ya gotta admit, it is REAL nice for Houston that our team is the only champion that the WNBA has ever had.
