Ever think the number is +1 because the other 3 players suck? Telfair is the starting PG with Foye at the SG for crying out loud. Yao with Telfair and Foye would probably have numbers of -20
It's much more complicated than that and I don't feel like delving into it right now. Use the search function if you have it. McHale has been discussed at length here on several occasions. It's an understatement to say he's been a pathetic GM. The KG trade was not his worst moment because he made the best of it. Suffice to say he won't get another GM job once he's fired from Minnesota.
No one expected Marc Gasol to even make it over to the US let alone be a rookie of the year candidate. Thats why.
I think its cyclical, I mean they were an expansion team in the 90's and made it into the playoffs every year for a decade, peeking at the western conference finals, and have had to rebuild. Garnett wasn't very good when he came into the league, I think McHale had a lot to do with his improvement working with him every day to get better and better. To say that the T-wolves have been completely miserable over McHale's 15 year tenure is a bit biased. They had many good years and to me are getting back on track. Jefferson's knee blowing out isn't McHale's fault. Being in Minnesota has a lot to do with not only free agents, but coaching as well. If Minnesota and New York had the exact same roster where do you think mike D'Antoni would sign? They've had to work with low level coaches and have had to give free agents more money to stay than normal. It's not an easy gig, but I think they're headed in the right direction.
I never said, "the T-wolves have been completely miserable over McHale's 15 year tenure". It is complete nonsense to state that I did and "bias" has nothing to do with my opinion on McHale. I don't care enough about the T-Wolves to regurgitate everything all over again. But if you think he's done OK, your opinion is as valid as mine. Glen Taylor seems to still like him and that is what matters.
I think they've both (Love and Mayo) played well in they're rookie seasons. I think people are too quick to dismiss what Mayo is doing because it isn't all that impressive for a wing player to score 18 or 19 points a night. It is, however, rare for a rookie to score so well. I'm most impressed by his free throw shooting. Getting to the line is one of the first things perimeter guys improve on as they learn what they can and can't do in the NBA. Just looking at how wing players normally improve it's not hard to see him averaging around 22 pts, 5 reb, 5 ast, on 45% fg%, and 40% 3p%.
Al Jefferson didnt emerge until his 3rd year. Kevin Love might not have high upside, but his numbers this year beats Al Jefferson's first 2 years.
How am I focusing on the negatives. Mayo's strength is scoring but how many good scorers(capable of averaging over 20) are there in the league at the wing position. There is one on almost every team and few have 2 players. Love's strength is rebounding. How many 10+ rebound guys are there in the league? There are currently five total and two of which are considered dominant players (Howard and Duncan). Love is currently 11th in rebounding while only playing 25 minutes a game. That is exceptional.
I think Love will develop into an Otis Thorpe type player. He might not be an all-star every year but these type of players are rare.
If I'm not mistaken he was offered a more attractive package including Jefferson + Rondo earlier in the season and he passed on it.
Why do you say that? They were doing pretty well after Mchale took over as coach and before Jefferson went down.
because those are not players you can build around. Their record is horrible and I just never see two guys like that making the playoffs. Now if the west starts declining which it may with come with the Mavs and Suns getting old, but they will never be more than maybe an 8/7 seed. They just are not those kind of players.
I think Love is a very similar player to Scola. They are both underathletic players that play a gritty game to compensate. They both have very good hands and read the ball well off the rim. Love's advantages are that he is a better shooter and much younger. Scola is currently more effective in the low post even if his methods are unconventional and predictable.
