Carter provides style and substance Associated Press HONOLULU -- Vince Carter put on such an awesome display -- 10 shots, no misses, five dunks, unmeasurable flair -- that he earned the highest praise possible in the basketball universe. "I can sit here and say I have seen the second coming," teammate Alonzo Mourning said. "I played against Michael Jordan and I saw MJ at his best, but I don't think MJ ever jumped that high. There are a lot of similarities, but there are a lot of things Vince can do better than Michael ever did. "I thought I'd never see another, but he is definitely the second coming." Man, I wish there was a way to get this guy on the Rockets!!!!!! Perhaps Mobley's friendship with him can help? Imagine Francis, Mobley/Anderson, Carter at the 1-3!!!! I'd trade the whole rest of the team for that. When is his contract up?
Randy Livingston was once called "the second coming of MJ". While I don't mind Zo comparing Carter to MJ, or even saying that Carter is better in some aspects of his game than MJ. I just wish he'd point out that MJ is better in other areas. It's weird because I am not and never will be a big fan of Jordan. I simply and reluctantly must respect the ability he showed on the court. The Raptors much like ourselves are very excited with how the future of our organizations is shaping up. There's really only one thing that could screw it all up for either of us. A career ending injury. I hope neither Carter or Francis ever have to endure a serious knee, ankle, foot, or hand injury. Just ask Randy how it affects your game..... ------------------ I have a dream.........his name's Hakeem. DREAMer's Rocket Page
I'm trying to understand what Vince does better than MJ. Other than maybe jump higher. He obviously doesn't play defense as well. He's nowhere near the leader that MJ was for the Bulls. I doubt his jumpshot is that much better than Jordan's, if at all. Anybody else care to clue me in? ------------------ Falk that Mo Fo!!!
I'm not sure about Jordan's 3-point shooting percentage but Carter shot 40% from beyond the arc last year, I don't think Jordan was ever that good at shooting 3-pointers. ------------------ You ain't gotta like me, you just mad cause I tell it how it is, and you tell it how it might be.
Well, to answer your question DoD - Vince has better 3point accuracy - not sure I ever saw Jordan shoot 40% from long distance (though he got pretty good at the 3 late in his career). And like Zo said, Vince -might- have better hops than even the early MJ (when Mourning played Jordan, it was late in #23's career, after he'd become less of a dunker and more of an all-around scorer). But obviously, Carter can't compare to MJ in a number of areas. Jordan was a much better passer, rebounder, and defender, and developed a great mid-range jump shot and post game that Carter has yet to master. ------------------
I think that that where Zo said Carter was better at than Jordan was again his hops and the power Vince dunks with. I don't think MJ dunked with as much power as Vince does. One edge I do give to MJ over Carter is that I think MJ's ability to stay in the air and float while waiting for the defenders to come down is better than Carter's ability to stay in the air. Another thing Zo may be talking about is that I think Carter may have a little more creativity in dunking than Jordan. ------------------ "See they pick and pick and pick. Man they picked me to death." -Steve Francis on the Utah Jazz
Its impossible to make and assesment after only 2 years. Jordan wasn't anything special after 2 seasons. He just made the highlights with his dunks. He learned to play an all around game in the following years, as I'm sure Vince will. ------------------ In order to be a success in life, you need 2 things: 1. Don't tell everything you know.
I'm fairly certain that Jordan scored more ppg than Vinsanity at an equivalent stage of his career. Vince may shoot better and jump higher, but there's just that something about MJ that he had that helped him to flat out score! (I hate MJ more than any of the rest of you, so this is no MJ favouritism!) ------------------
MJ was the better player at that stage. MJ was the best player of all time, but I have to admit that Vince is the better dunker and is better at most aspects of dunking than Jordan. I think Carter will be a pretty damn good player, I think he will be an all time great maybe top 10 or top 5 ever to play the game. I just can't imagine someone living up to MJ's standards. ------------------ "See they pick and pick and pick. Man they picked me to death." -Steve Francis on the Utah Jazz
Ah, the 3pt %age. You guys are right. But there were many people with better verticals than Michael, there were many people that shot the 3 better, etc. But nobody excelled at almost every aspect of the game like MJ did. I just don't think Vince is anywhere near comparing to Michael in that respect. Not yet, anyway. I think what propels people to make Vinsanity the next MJ is nothing more than his dunking skills and that's not even half the MJ equation. When he adds defense, passing skills, and what appeared to be a good knowledge of the game comparable to MJ, then maybe we can talk about him in the same breath. Until then, Vince is a highlight reel and we've had quite a few of those... ------------------ Falk that Mo Fo!!! [This message has been edited by Dr of Dunk (edited September 05, 2000).]
