From 82 games, the stats seem to support that pryzbilla is pretty good.

Being a good post defender isn't as important as it used to be. All you need now is an athletic guy or someone who can shoot 10 ft and out.

I don't know ... this year Chuck is looking pretty thick. I'd say he's at least 260 lb.

Maybe you mean inch for inch. :D

Cal me homer, but its got to be the Chuckwagon. For a person at his height to gaurd the likes of Nowitizki & Aldridge, makes him extremely valuable in a playoff setting.

Chuck hayes is the best one on one post defender or atleast up there with garnett and pryzbilla. Howard is a great shot blocker and he keeps the paint clean but garnett and Duncan do a similarly impressive job of that and are both better man defenders than dwight. I'd give the overall edge to garnett.

I think if Yao had a bit more better inside defenders in at the same time, he would stand out more. When ever Hayes is in the game with him the inside is usually solid.

I would probably say Chuck Hayes or Tim Duncan.

    Here would be my rankings

    1. Duncan

    2. Pryzbilla

    3. Hayes/Yao - Both good post defenders, Yao advantage for interior guys, Hayes for perimeter guys

    4. Tyson Chandler

    5. Rasheed Wallace

Chuck isn't going to block a lot of shots, but man does he shut down guys attempting to post up. Shane and Ron are great, but Chuck is the only one that when his man gets the ball I don't worry about them scoring.

Especially for being so short. He just gives up no ground and lets the offensive guy wear himself out on moves. If the guy could dunk regularly, he'd get more props. If we go deep in the playoffs, he may end up getting a lot more.

Aside from him. Yao is good defending his man. Dwight is an athletic phenom and as a result a great shot blocker. As for Bynum, I don't know. I know if I were from BSPN he'd be the best of all time, alas I am not. If Greg Oden ever stays healthy he may move close to the top.

KG is more of a perimeter defender. He's really not an interior defender like a Tim Duncan or a Yao Ming.

KG is the clear cut best pick n roll defender in basketball at this point, he has lost a step in his rebounding and block shots due to decline of athleticism.

Sorry, flopping on every other possession against Yao is not really be underrated. If anything, he is an underrated flopper.

Probably Duncan or KG in term's of pure 1-on-1 defense and who I would least want guarding me as an opponent.

I think physical monsters like Yao, Dwight and Camby are more intimidating due to their size alone and not necessary their 1-on-1 defensive ability. Sort of like decoys in a way. Physically, they're absolute monsters and when they aren't literally blocking shots they're providing the equally valuable contribution of being able to alter shots as well. Simply stated: when they're in the game teams are more reluctant to go inside. That, however, doesn't necessarily make them great defenders on the ball.

Chuck Hayes!!! It's not a homer pick either, the guy is phenomenal at times.

I didn't see his name mentioned, but Stephen Jackson (my favorite player outside of the Rox :) ) is an extremely underrated defender.

Despite Kobe's numbers against him the other night, I haven't seen anyone play him better than Captain Jack this season. Well, maybe Ron-Ron or Shane, but that would just be me being partial.

Everyone else has said it, but whenever Chuck is put into the game and is put to defend a big name post player, they get completely and utterly shut down unless their fall away jumper is falling.

I've seen it against Garnet, Aldridge, Nowitzki, Duncan, Ilgauskus and every other post player he's put on. They push and push and almost always LOSE ground when Chuck is guarding. Well maybe they don't lose ground, but when your so used to seeing every post player able to inch towards the rack every time (they have the momentum after all) and then suddenly they run into a brick wall, it certianly looks like they lose ground.

Add in the fact that he was amazingly quick hands and feet and has really good balance, I would say he is the best post defender in the game.

Howards by far the better interior defender, and Yao's ability to alter shots gives him an edge. But if I can pick one man to stop a post up player for one possession, I want Chuck.

I'm confused as to what the question is. The title asks who the best post player defender is but all the responses mention shot blocking.

Assuming you mean 'post player' as in synonym for 'big man', then I would say Kevin Garnett. Though he may have slowed down a bit, there's a case he's the best team defender in NBA history.

If you meant to ask 'who is the best at guarding the post', I would say Chuck Hayes 20 lbs. ago. Non-Rocket fans might find this preposterous but the man just straight up shuts down All-Star power forwards. I wish someone had a clip of that 2 or 3 play sequence earlier this year when KG kept trying to back him down with the former not budging an inch.

Doesn't Bynum regularly get benched, when healthy, in the fourth quarter of games because of his inconsistent output on the defensive end?
