Exactly. When I was a kid, the radio stations used to have these "Battle of the Bands" when they'd pit all these famous bands against each other- I think they called one the "Super Bowl of Rock and Roll"- all I remember is that it was The Beatles vs. Led Zeppelin for the final one. Some of my favorites that I'd like to see: Nirvana vs. Pearl Jam U2 vs. REM Deep Purple vs. Black Sabbath The Clash vs. The Ramones (I think that one was on here already) or, if we're going cross-generational: The Who vs. U2 Black Sabbath vs. Metallica Possibilities are endless.
Its all about R.E.M. Now they're better than Radiohead... Oasis is my favorite band ever, so obviously I'm biased. I like Radiohead better than most bands though...
Silly as the thread might seem it drew me out of lurking, so nice one! BTW I got to see Primal Scream w/the Brian Jonestown Massacre opening up last night here in LA, live in Htown here on vacation. The Scream f-in rocked it, hard! A great great show!
<br> Ok, question for you. What bands should I look into if I really like The Verve? I mean I'm pretty sure Ashcroft is one of my favorite musicians period, so I need more VERVE!
I couldn't understand what the hell Eddie Veder was singing about. I had to find the lyrics to Jeremy. It sounded like Scooby Doo was singing "Rraremy Rroken Rass Ruday" I do own the album with the camel or yak on the cover. They are good live though.
Um, lets see...Spritualized are good esp. their early stuff, Ashcrofts wife was in that band until 97. Here is a great blog site that has all of their releases that you can d/l. Check out all of it esp. a great live album called *****ed Up Inside. Another band noone has heard yet is called Exit Calm from England, they are unsigned but they are the heir-apparent to Verve. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewProfile&friendID=80448263 Their first full length is in the mixing stages currently with Ulrich Schnauss at controls, should be up there w/some of the all time great first albums.
Oasis is way better than Radiohead. Radiohead bores the hell out of me. Oasis should be huge in the us.
all their albums are good. definitely maybe and whats the story morning glory are two classic albums.
I picked Oasis because I know more of their songs but Radiohead has some good songs and I like their sound.
I agree that little james is weak but gas panic is a great ****ing song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3eK_i7XWgs
absolutely! Gas Panic was a deep song about trying to end drug use. and the Oasis generalists think all Oasis songs sound the same. This one is a great example of a different sounding song. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/bhc1LB_0auM&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/bhc1LB_0auM&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> Clutchfans are ya mad fer it?
Here is another blog site, this one has live Verve for d/l. You need to hear them live, that is really where they shine. http://www.valiumskies.blogspot.com/ I guess I should have asked you if you perfer the more song orintated Verve (Urban Hymns) or the spacey stuff (A Storm in Heaven and A Northern Soul) from Verve. That would help in directing you to other bands like them.
derivative.. per usual Oasis.. with an added hint of god awful.. not exactly a distinction worth noting..
Alright. Comparing Oasis to Radiohead is like comparing apples to oranges. They are completely different musical species. Like trying to compare The Stones to Pink Floyd or something. One is a rock n' roll band, and the other is more of an art rock type band. In England, it tends to boil down to social class. Some of you probably remember the Blur vs. Oasis feud. That was pure working class (Oasis) vs. middle class (Blur, Radiohead). The class struggle is very intense over there and the people identify heavily through their music, especially the working class. For your average american music fan though, I suppose it just boils down to personal preference. I think they are both brilliant bands, though neither of them do I listen to much anymore. They both have the ability to write a soulful heart rendering tune, but they come at it from different perspectives. Oasis are (or were i guess) far more desperate, because those guys are basically hard street thugs. If Oasis hadn't happened, they'd be dead broke, and petty criminals. Music was their way to a better life. The Radiohead guys all have degrees from the universities over there, and could be comfortably making plenty money at some professional job, if they didnt have music. Maybe for that reason, Oasis sold out for the cash along time ago, and Radiohead have never done that, they didn't have to. Not saying that makes them better or worse, it just is what it is. To me, the best british band of the 90's BY FAR is Verve. In my opinion, they are the last real, honest and great rock n roll band to come out, anywhere, not just the UK. Nobody else has been able to come close, and if you are only aware of Richard Ashcroft, (a band is MUCH more than just its singer) or only have heard Urban Hymns, you need to take a closer look and listen.
I think both bands are great in their own way. Pretty hard to compare the two since their styles are so different. Some days I feel like listening to Radiohead and other I feel like Oasis. I do think Radiohead are better musicians and more adventurous with their sound, but Oasis has a tried and trusted formula which has produced some real good song. It's nice to see people talking about some great British band, cuz honestly bands in American don't come close to British bands. On that note, I dunno how many of yall have heard of Elbow. They are out of Manchester and have been around for more than 10 years, but are really starting to get recognition now. Each of their four albums have been really great. Check this one out. <object width="480" height="295"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/GNIXPQoz0s0&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/GNIXPQoz0s0&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="295"></embed></object>
Well, if you're talking about recently, I can't speak to that because I haven't kept up with current music as much as I'd like to. But if you're talking about British vs. American bands pre-1990, I think a few of these groups may beg to differ on their comparison to British bands: Aerosmith Van Halen The Doors Tom Petty REM The Ramones Lynyrd Skynyrd Guns N' Roses Creedence Clearwater Revival Sly and the Family Stone Jimi Hendrix Experience Heart Living Color The Replacements Prince and the Revolution ZZ Top The Call Santana Ten Years After Buffalo Springfield Cheap Trick The Pixies They Might Be Giants The Smithereens all the pioneers from the '50s You get the point. American rock and roll rules.
I like Blur too. I saw them in concert. Too bad Damon wanted to be the second coming of Bono. The Great Escape is one of my favorite albums. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/x2BBfv9WK_w&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/x2BBfv9WK_w&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Your insight into the class issues in Britain surrounding these bands is spot on, but you can't forget that there was a lot of media hype and showmanship going on. Those bands used to sell a lot of records and there was a lot of money in hyping all of that stuff. Radiohead have been a much bigger band in America because they really didn't feed into that narrative over there. My favorite British bands of the 90's: Super Furry Animals and Supergrass. I encourage everybody to check them out.
