    Console: Microsoft 360
    Game: NBA2k9

Question: Why can I install this game???

This option might have always been around but I just noticed it when playing around with the 360. Just like a regular comp., I was given the option to install the game in the drive and after wards play it with out the disc.

Has this options always been there and my failure to explore never found it or is a new thing or is there a reason for it (game hours, achievements, etc).

It doesnt make sense (I do like it though....in case my disc gets scratched or something) on game publisher's side. I can go borrow or rent a game and have it on my HD and not spend big bucks to own it???? Or is there more to it?

They did this when they updated the dashboard a few months ago. You have to have the disc in the tray to play the game, it just doesn't spin and read from the disc. It speeds up loading time, and protects you if your game gets partially damaged. You can't just rent a game and install it because you still need the disc.

You cannot play any 360 games without the disk in the console. This has never been and will never be an option due to piracy concerns. I don't even think they have a modchip that will do this.

Actually they tested it and it doesn't really help loading times. Maybe by a fraction of a second. Other games it actually made the loading times worse. So don't even worry about that feature, it is useless. I am thinking the only real reason to use it would be to maybe lengthen the life of the 360???.. i dunno.

You're kidding me right? Does your 360 not sound like a jet engine when the disc is spinning? The only reason I install games to the hard drive is so the console is silent. I also like to think this won't cause overheating because the fan isn't running like crazy.

Fable II and FIFA 09 load times were drastically reduced when I installed the games to the hard drive.

5 seconds here and there helps a lot in the long run. And like others said, the system runs cooler and quieter.

according to the replies you still need the disc in the drive but its not required to spin so I guess it says a tid bit of driver life.

instead of clicking the option to play game in drive go to the hard drive then you should see the option to install current game to hard drive after wards you get an option to play off the hard drive.

Product keys (ala Windows) FTW, why MS doesn't incorporate this is beyond me.
