If this was an article about a specific felon that did something bad, you'd probably have negative comments towards him or her too. Some people prefer not to use broad generalizations on a group of 16,000 people where you have no specifics on them. In this case, you have article about, and specifics on, a single sheriff potentially committing abuse of power. So it's not surprising that the focus would be on the guy that the article is about.

What a silly thing to say.

Rep. Jefferson of Louisiana got caught with a 100 grand in bribe bribe money in his safe, and Democrats rallied around him.

    Your comment is ridiculous.

Your comment is ridiculous. It was his freezer.

If by "rallied around" you mean kicked off of his committee and asked him to resign, then you're right.

Otherwise, "Your comment is ridiculous" because it is based on a fiction.

The Democrats did not rally around him at all.

Democrats rallied around him? Where? His own largely black, overwhelmingly black district kicked him out of office for a Republican in an overwhelmingly dominant Democrat year.

Are you aware of how dumb that statement is? It takes 10 years for a legal immigrant to become a citizen, so unless there's some illegal express way to citizenship I'm not aware of, you're an idi*t.

    Oh I'm sorry.

I guess I am the one who is confused. When the Congressional Black Caucus defended Jefferson, when his district reelected him in the middle of the investigation, and when Pelosi placed him on the Small Business Committee, I thought that was Democrats supporting Jefferson.

I guess the Republicans don't want them to be deported in greater numbers, because who else would be left to hire illegally? who else would work for $ 3.00 a hour? Oh snap!

    I agree with you there.

The truth is that neither the Democrats or the Republicans will move to deport illegal immigrants in my opinion.

Big business needs illegal immigrants. I don't think you will find a serious economist who will say that illegal immigration is bad for the economy. The truth is that our economy would suffer greatly without illegal immigrants.

The other obvious truth is that Republicans and Democrats won't do anything to anger the Hispanic voter. The battle for the Hispanic voter will determine every major election for years to come.

Me, I think we should offer amnesty to all illegal immigrants, and then move to enforce immigration laws. Until we find a solution though, Sheriff Joe is just doing his job.

So let's recap, when the speaker of the house has him kicked off the powerful Ways & Means committee and reassigned (source? Link? Other than right wing blog that you are copy pasting from) to some chickensh-t committee = That is rallying support.

There's one point we can pretty much agree on.

He is taking essentially a misdemeanor crime and pursuing enforcement to the exclusion of much more serious felonies because it will result in greater personal aggrandizement. I don’t see how that could be defined as doing his job.

What would you say if he closed down the homicide detective unit and reassigned everybody there to work the tough jaywalking cases? Would that be 'just doing his job'?

    Could define the "misdemeanor crime"?

    LOL, I deserved that.

I was, of course, trying to get you to say that we shouldn't prosecute illegal immigration.

I think we need to prosecute all crimes vigorously. If the laws can't be prosecuted for some reasons because they make too large a percentage of the population a criminal, then the laws are bad and should be repealed or modified.

I read the excutive summary of this study and it is pretty damning. I've skimmed through all three pages of this thread and have yet to hear any response to this study.
