Clutch has reported that the Rockets have had a couple of guards in for a look, lately. Why?!? Isn't our guard rotation solid? Or, are they planning on moving one of the 3 guards (Francis, Mobley, Moochie) in a trade?

I know that the Rockets like to put up smoke screens, but who's going to believe that they are really interested in a guard?

Maybe, Rudy plans on implementing the second phase of small ball, called, small small ball. :D This'll be where he runs out five 6'4" or smaller guards at the same time.

Any worthwhile theories?

Probably depth. Beyond those three, who do the Rockets have that can effectively play one of the guard spots, especially shooting guard? A big guard would be a good change of pace, especially one that can play defense.

Depth and talent everywhere isn't necessarily a bad thing.

They've got Torres at 6'6" to back up Mobley & he showed some flashes of being a solid player.

I'm guessing depth. Both of the guys they've had in are second rounders. Torres may or may not be a long-term solution. They have to keep looking for good depth at that position. The second round is better for finding guard talent than big man talent anyway.

If they were to look at bigger names (Kareem Rush, Jason Williams, Dejuan Wagner), it would arouse a little more curiousity.

They're waiting for draft position before dealing with their top pick...why bring in Curtis Borchardt when you have the #1 pick?

But, for now we have no solid backup behind Cat/Steve that doesn't have a dribble to pass ratio under 100:1.

Both of the guys they are looking at look like the instant offense type-which makes sense, so when the bench unit comes in, the whole offensive mindset doesn't change.

I think that Woods is the answer, here is a guy who can start at small forward and if need be I certainly think that he can play guard. Here's hoping for an unusually solid draft. This is a deep one fellas.

we are looking at guards because tierre and oz are unrestricted free agents.

also it will keep both of them on there toes, knowing that we are bringin in a possible replacement will keep them working on their game this summer.

There's no freaking point in getting a backup if Steve Francis and Cuttino Mobley continue to play 42+ minutes a game. They can stick in the Dribble King for those 12 or so minutes left over. So of course we are picking a guard with the number five pick. :)

Dude, I love that...

The Dribble King.

Classic. And, sadly enough, very true.

Is it possible to acquire Avery Johnson?
I am not an expert of cap limit and trading rules.. but AJ's experiences and his leadership can benefit Francis more than anyone.

Every year they look at the marginal guys/second rounder guys first. You'll see more of the people they're intrested in after Portsmouth/Phoenix/Chicago.

Why does everyone freak out because they are looking at guards? They can't just bring in Ming an Woods every day of their evaluation period. It is better to look at everyone so that you don't get caught with your pants down. Suppose a trade comes along that has us giving up Mobley and Norris in order to acquire a front court player. It would be nice to have seen some guards if that scenario presents itself. I'm not saying that it is likely to happen, but it's better to be prepared. The Rockets can either look at these guys or do absolutely nothing for the day. I, for one, am glad that they are looking at a variety of people rather than looking at a five polayer range near our picks as many of you idiots would suggest. You sound like r****ds when you sit here and complain about who they bring in as though you are the only people on the planet that know we need a 3 and a 5. Keep your options open. It hurts nothing.

I agree with that 100%. If we're brining in a guard in the second round, why not sign Avery Johnson who has proved he knows how to win and knows what he's doing on the court. We shouldn't be trying to draft the next Gary Payton at point guard because that wont benefit the team and we allread have Stevie.

first of all we are not in the playoffs...what the hell is Rudy supposed to do in his spare time. He cares so much about winning and we have so many options this offseason that looking at guards is just searching for any intangeble that would help the team. in no way do i believe they are willing to trade anyone in the guard unit.

I have a feeling Rudy would love to get rid of Moochie but his contract and his standing with Steve and Cuttino won't allow for it.

AJ is a PG. I don't beleive we are looking at PG's because we have our starter and backup.

But we don't have a backup 2. If Cat gets hurt, our only option is to move Steve to 2 and let Mooch play PG. This assumes we don't retain Torres and/or Torres doesn't continue to improve.

Seem's pretty simple to me.

Regardless of the MPG average, you have to plan for injuries.

I really like Torres backing up the 2.

I'd like Torres and Mooch to each play 10 minutes at their positions.
