Sources: Microsoft may cut Xbox price LOS ANGELES (Reuters) -- Microsoft has told major United States retailers that it plans to announce a price cut for its Xbox video game console within days, according to sources familiar with those discussions. A price cut for the Xbox has been widely expected in recent weeks by industry analysts who have said the cut could jump-start sales ahead of the traditionally slow summer months. Microsoft has a press conference scheduled for May 20, the first night of the Electronic Entertainment Expo -- called E3 -- in Los Angeles, the game industry's most important event of the year. The price cut will be announced then, the sources said. ================================ Sony slashes PlayStation prices NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Sony has launched a price war in the video game industry, reducing the price of its PlayStation 2 by one-third to $199 effective immediately. The company also cut the price of its PS1 console, the original PlayStation, from $99 to $49. This isn't that unexpected. I'm actually suprised that it took Sony THIS long to cut the price of the PS2. Over the life of a system, a video game company will make almost no money off console sales. Virtually all profits come from software sales, which is why the VG industry is so concerned with software piracy.
