I wouldn't be surprised if both of them play, actually.

Ariza was making a play on the ball and it almost looked as if hitting Rudy on the head was inadvertent.

Odom remained off the court. The rule says he can't come onto the court, and he didn't.

It'll be interesting to see what they NBA will do.

If we had a healthy strong Tmac wouldn't we be better? Most people agree to that. The problem is Tmac has suck almost all year and he came in out of shape. Without Tmac, doing what we are doing should be noted.

I was wondering about that rule. Is it that the player "can't leave the bench" or that he "can't come onto the court"?

    exactly right.

did the nuggets care that yao and scola fouled out? no, because nba rules say after 6 personals, you miss the rest of the game.

nba rules also say if you leave the bench during a fight you must be suspended.

part of the game. too bad for the lakers. i hope ariza and odom are out against us, and back against the spurs!

Dunno, not an expert, but ESPN folks were saying it's "court" not "bench". Then again, ESPN is very pro-Lakers.

    1994-95
    • Shortened the three-point line (22 feet in the corners extending to 23 feet, nine inches at the top of the key) to a uniform 22 feet around the basket.
    • Awarded three foul shots for any player fouled while attempting a three-point field goal.

Any player who leaves the bench during a fight automatically suspended for a minimum of one game and fined a maximum of $20,000; in addition to losing 1/82nd of his salary for each game, he is suspended.

    • Any player who commits two flagrant fouls in one game will be ejected.
    • Hand-checking eliminated from the end line in the backcourt to the opposite foul line.
    • Technical foul fines increased to $500 each. Formerly, the fines were $100 for the first technical and $150 for the second.
    • “Clear path” rule changed to include contact in the backcourt. If a defender, grabs a player when the player has a clear path to the basket on a breakaway, two foul shots will be awarded.
    • The second or more of back-to-back timeouts when the ball is not inbounded will be limited to 45 seconds.

    I found this on NBA.com: http://www.nba.com/analysis/rules_history.html

It appears to be updated through 2007-08 and that was the last update to the "leave the bench during a fight" rule I could find.

Basically, it doesn't seem like it matters whether you actually step onto the playing area. What seems to matter is whether "you leave the vicinity of the bench."

That is sweet then. Not having Ariza hurts their bench and not having Odom hurts their size against Yao/Scola/Landry. Artest/Battier slow down Kobe and we pull a W. We'll see though, Kobe can always pull something out of his butt.

    nice find!

odom definitely stepped away from the bench and went chest to chest with roy for a little staring contest.

the problem here is that the fight was in very close proximity to the "bench area" so it doesn't appear that odom really leaves (he didnt get on the court at all) because the fight was going on right in front of him. he did take a few steps forward, walking into the fight, and getting involved. thats where he crossed the line. hopefully the nba agrees.

Can Ariza get a "stay of execution" by appealing any suspension? I know in MLB when players appeal suspensions they're allowed to play until they're allowed to make their case to the league and a final ruling is handed down. Teams use this strategically to be able to use a player in a certain game before dropping the appeal and serving the suspension.

I'm not sure if it works the same way in the NBA but if it does, Ariza could appeal so he could play against us and the Spurs and then drop the appeal and serve the suspension against the Mavs or Philly. Same for Odom.

I remember Kobe getting suspended for his backslap and he tried to appeal cause the game he was suspended for was the Knicks game, no dice. The suspension held.

I agree. It was good to see at least one guy worry more about the player that was injured than getting into the scuffle.

With that said, Pau Gasol was definitely worried about Rudy (they are really good friends). I just think he wanted to stop the situation from getting any worse first.

Odom's going to get a one game suspension. The question is whether he'll serve it the next game against us.

I don't know what the NBA will do with Ariza. He deserves at least a five game suspension in my opinion.

im pretty sure the rule states that you can not step on the playing surface not that u can not get off the bench, so there is a loophole there that they might get away with. But evenso he should be suspended for getting into it with the \blazer players. sux we cant beat em at full strength though. guess we will just have to wait till the playoffs. :)
